This last week had very little in the way of fishing news. All .1 really heard, and Couldn't find out much about, was on stripers. Ellery Bowman told me that he’d heard of two being taken down in the Rips, and ••Skeet” Shaw of Green Creek told rhe he'd seen a striper taken in the nets off the Bay along with a goodsized weakfish. . Then Ed Jones told me on Thursday that he'd been trying for stripers in the Rips, but. had had no success - Ed used two lines dredging, and three lines on top with one of them dragging a live|eel, but he said he couldn't get any hits. He was out thete Just before the-storms started, to hit us, and after that I don't believe any one got

out fishing.

I WENT CP to Ocean City on Thursday with I-eo Sterenberg of Del Haven to attend the Cape May County Chamber of Commerce meeting there, and on the way back we got a chance to view firsthand the damage that this storm had done to Whale Beach, and

with higher than usual tides, and strong winds did a lot of damage however.

As we were riding along out of Ocean City, Leo and I got talking about the pro* blems we face here on our Jersey Cape. I told Leo I didn’t really know what to write about this week. He responded: “Why don’t you talk abbut the problems we had with offshore drilling last year, and suggest that if they’re going to explore for oil and gas offpur coast, why don’t they do it in the offseason instead of at tbe height of our vacation season? I. think that’s *a very good topic, and I think it's about time that somebody got after the oil companies to leave . us alone % during the time when tourism booms in our area. We know we can’t stop them exploring, but

of Bob’s. The present was supplied by Joseph Ostrowskl, coordinator of . Cooperative Education at Vo-Tech by oral illustra- 1 tions of the vocational school, and the career center. The future was projected by Hans Toft, Bob’s son, who has long beert h companion with his dad hunting and fishing.

Inlet.

The'' road from Strathmere to Sea-Isle is now |)assab|Pt but there’s a lot of mud and kand on each side' of it. The , dune in Townsends Inlet is gone, and after, siterag all this damage you^realize just how little defense we have against the se8 right nqwi’becaus* this last ; storm wasn't even a major one. I BELIEVE it developed from tropical storm Katrinha. which was first reported, and then ignored. The big swells generated by this depression, coupled

compromise like that. It ^ou|d really be disastrous

and he said it well as he .quoted: ‘*When things get tpugh, the tough get tougher; but when things really get tough, the Toft's

go fishing!”

And that almost sums it all up. This exceptional young man showed alf the admiration a son could have for a father; and he is a credit to the training Bob

has given Him.

THEBE WERE 1R5 of us there that night, and "Gam’’ Broadley, president of the Boafd, started it off, along'with remarks from’ Malcolm MacEwan.

WELL, AFTER that journey, my wife Jane, my sister-in-law Bca, and I were privilegiad to witness and be part of, the retiremeat dinner for Robert N. Toft, who has pioneered the vocational school program here in Cape May County for the last 22 years. Bob has probably brought more learning in th£ vocational, vein to Cgpd May County

richly deservecK the tributes that were handed to him at the Linwood Country dub Friday night.

Boil Owens, supervisor of the Evening School, was master of ceremonies, and the format was unique and imaginative. The past was presented J3y Benjamin Shapiro, retired state Dept, of Education head, who started him off in the early

days and is a lifelongfriend our retired County Supt. of Schools. Then Jim Scrivani, vice president of Vo-Tech, did a good job of eulogizing Bob, while Bill Tozour and Ella Foster, the other members of the Board, gave moral support. Robert Bongart, County Superintendent of Schools, introduced the many distinguished guests who gave memorable resolutions of respect to . this man who has made the Vocational School and the Career Center possible up at the Crest Haven complex. I shouldn’t forget the County freeholders, who were represented by Jack Bittner of Ocean City. They had a well founded resolution; and it was they who made the material contributions that made Bob’s dream possible. I wish I had more ^poce to write down all tjie glowing tributes, but Tni running out of paper.
