TRENTON — A 20 percent increase in hunting and fishing licenses along with a plan to tie annual fe* charges to the cost of living have been proposed by the NJ Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife and reviewed with the Fish and Game Council’s Finance Commit- , tee. . The proposed increases effective with the 1983 season, .were presented at the November meeting of the Fish and Game Council. The councilis expected to take final action in, January after the proposal hds been Circulated to New Jersey's sportsmen. ALONG WITH the proposed increased the division also recommended a plan to provide for the adjustment of the license fees annually to take into, account the rate of inflation. This plan would take effect in 1963. Also recommended was the addition of an “All Around Sportsmen License" which would allow a sportsman to buy just one license for freshwater fishing, including trout; firearm hunting, and bow and arrow hunting. * crease in license fees is required to enable the Division to continue its existing wildlife and fish management programs. WITHOUT AN increase in funds, a number of the Division’s programs would be curtailed, and there would be a substantial ,reduction of personnel. The laOt license increase was adopted in I960. The fiscal operation of tiie division is of para? mount concern both to the division and the % council and is a problem which is going to be carefully examined through a new review of existing programs in order to achieve economies whprdver possible BOTH THE COUNCIL and the division agree that all programs must be examined to determine what savings can be made while maintaining the high quality of hunting and fishing
opportunities for New Jersey’s sportsmen. The proposal to seasonally adjust license fees based upon the annual rate of in flation would give the Fish and Game' Council' the authority to adjust the fees (either up or down) according to the innation rate as measured by the federal Consumer Price Indefc. THE PROPOSAL for an all-inclusive license for the 1983 season would allow for one license which would ^)egood for all freshwater fishing, including trout; bow and arrow hunting, and- firearm hunting. The proposed cost would be $47.50. which represents a small saving over the cost of individua) licenses. In addition, the division • has recommended a state waterfowl ^tamp (for ducks and geese) to takeef-. feet in 1983. The cost of the fltate waterfowl stamp would.be $3.
