$300,000 Starts Off Hospital Fund Drive

COURT HOUSE - The $1.5 million fund drive of Burdette Tomli'tl Memorial Hospital got off to an auspicious start last Friday with the announceqient of a $300,000 pledge from the h hospital's 600-member auxiliary. ' Jarte Hartin, Auxiliary presidenti and a member of the hospital’s Board of Governors. announced that the pledge will be met from monies.raised in the auxiliary chapters situated throughout the county. funds derived from the largest fund drive since the hospital was constructed in 1950 will be used -to help offset the $33 million^overall costs of a massive expansion and modernization program. Among the plans is the construction of a patient tower that will contain 132 new beds, including a' modern 16-bed Intensive and Coronary Care Unit and a new modern surgery suite. UPON BEING INFORMED of the pledge, the first inUhe campaign, Fund Drive Chairman Robert J. Smeltzer expressed his gratitude to the auxiliary for its efforts. “Such a large pledge, coming at the beginning of our drive, sets the keynote for a successful campaign," he said. “We are very optimistic that as the weeks progress, this generous figure will be increased still more through the contributions of the civic-minded residents of Cape May County.” ' Mrs. Hartin, a £ea Isle resident who is a registered nurse in the hospital’s pediatrics division, said the pledge i^ being made concurrent with the 30th anniversary of the auxiliary, which was founded shortly after the hospital began. THE AUXILIARY. WHICH HAS' a membership of men and women, sponsors several major events during Ihe year to, raise funds. One is a horse show recogniz- 1 ed by the American Horse Show Association and held each June at the Meadow Creek Farm in Clermont. This year's show -raised $12,000 for the hospital. Auxiliary members also operate the Etcetera Shop, a hospital gift shop, and the Cheeri-Corner, the hospital luncheonette. , * Another big event is the Memorial Day weekend antique fair which is run by. the Bayberry TWIGS. Other chapters also hold special fund raising affairs

throughout the year

A new endeavor this year will be a cook book which. Mrs. Hartin said, is planned to be sold nationwide It is expected to come off the presses within one to two years. FROM ITS EARNINGS during the 1960-1981 year the auxiliai’y gave the hospital $150,000 for a fluoroscopy machine, a playroom for the pediatrics section and for lobby drapes and carpeting, among other items. This year it was already provided funds for furnishing the south lobby of the hospital. Mrs. Hartin, who has been a member of the auxiliary since 1973, was co-chairman of the Horse Show. She joined the Burdette Tomlin nursing staff in 1974, one yeaf after she became an auxiliary member. She served-two years as president of the Sea Isle chapter before becoming auxiliary president for a two-year term last May.
