Bus Shelters Off til Spring
■ Lower Township and Stone Harbor — the first two Jersey Cape communities to take advantage of a state-funded program providing for the construction of bus shelters — probably won’t see the first one installed until the first of Mar/ch That word frortt county transportation planner Robert Bonner who two months ago claimed he was '•optimistic" that at least some of the requested 28'sheJtecs —" 27 in Lower Twp. and 1 in Stone HarboV — .would be in place by Christmas. THE "EARLY ACTION Bus Shelter PrQgram 4 * is sponsored by the state Dept > of Transportation and the N.J. Transit Coro. — money being provided thru the 1979 state Transportation Bond Issue. Under the bond issue some $400,000 has been appropriated to install shelters throughout New Jersey’s $1 counties. • There’s no limit to the number of structures any county or municipality can have,
and the cost of. installing (he aluminum and plexiglass strucutres is covered by the state. The only cost to ihdividual municipalities is to fund maintenance after installation, is complete - including repairs resulting from vandalism. MR. BONNER INDICATED recently that confirmation from the state apprbv- . ing selected sites has yet to be received. He added in addition to the two communiti£s that have asked for shelters — to; be used both public and county Fare 1 system riders — Ocean City. Middle Township ar\d Cape May City are expected to apply for shelters in the near future Mr. Bonner also said that the Lower Township Committee will shortly be adopting a resolution designating the shelter sites as legal bus stops. This procedure is required by law. Curtently the only legal bus stop in the county is in Cape May City.
