. Christmas presents. WhaC could be a better gift than the new, "comeback" album by the legendary Del Shannon. Sounding as good as the day he cut, Runaway and Searchin, Shannon’s Drop Down And Got Mo (Elektra) is' an amazing rock record, produced by Tom PeUy and strong backing from The Heartbreaken. Shannon's voice is smooth and confident and his songwriting as sharp as
ever. a
Not only will this put a smiie on the face of his original fans, but the Petty connection will win over a whole new generation. ARTHUR LEE MIGHT NOT have been as famous as Del Shannon, but to musicians Lee’s mid-sixties group Love was a major inspiration. His new solo album on Rhino Records (116*9 West PicoBlvd., Los Angeles, Ca.) might not match his work with Love, but it’s still a hard rocking, honest piece of work. Arthur Lee blends rock, soul, jazz and folk to come up with a unique sound, and he deserves to be heard. JOHN ENTWISTLE MIGHT BE the quiet, moody bassist of The Who, but he’s also a gifted songwriter and singer on his own. His new album, Too Late The Hero (Atco) is a strong one, with good melodies and top-notched backing by Joe Walsh and Joe Vitale. John Entwistle is a true talent who doesn’t need to hide behind the security of The Who. Fortunately for us, he continues to have a solo career as well. THIRD WORLD HAS BEEN one of the more successful reggae groups iri this country because of the way they blend their Jamaican music with American soul. Their new record, Rocfe the World (Columbia) is another one with rich melodies and passionate harmonies. FINALLY. BLUES FANS CAN rejoice with the threevolume San Francisco Blues Festival Series on Solid Smoke Records (P.O. Box 22372, San Francisco, CA. 94122), Stellar performances by people such as Roy Brown, Lowell Fnlson, Big Mama Thornton, and Jimmy Rogers, to mention only a few, make this a must for any fan of the blues, yne hopes this series will continue for a long, long time.
