SWAINTON — Stone Harbor’s pioneering recycling efforts in the county have been heralded by Joel R. Jacobson, Commissioner of the State Department of Energy, and Jerry F. English, Commissioner of Environmental Protection. In a letter to Stone Harbor Mayor James G. Wood on behalf of the state Office of Recycling, Jacobson and English lauded the borough's efforts to comply with county and state recycling goals. "WE WOULD like to take this opportunity to congratulate you for\your efforts in developing this program and pioneering the way in Cape MajK'County,” Commissioners Jacobson and English said in their letter. "Such programs are vital to achieving the goals of the state recycling plan." The borough initiated its source separa-

tion efforts Oct. ‘19 as part of a county pilotrecycling program developed by the county Munictoal Utilities Authority. The borough was the first municipaUty in Cape May County to participate in the pilot program. IN ITS FIRST month of source separation, Stone Harbor recycled 17 tons of mixed glass arid newsprint, according to Diane DeMeo, county recycling coordinator. “This generation rate is quite impressive considering that the year round population ^of Stone Harbor is approximately 1,200. ^ "We are Very pleased with the response of the municipalities participating in our pilot recycling program" she said, "and we are proud that the state has recognized the efforts put forth by these communities."

What Moore called “a massive beach fill” is in the works for all of Sea Isle City as well as the heavily damaged beaches at Strathmere. He said the environmental study is still to be made but a mid or late summer work start Is

reasonable to expect. Asked about early repairs to the dykes protecting the south Cape May meadows, Hurley said he had been told of the shift in ownership for * large proportion of the meadows from a private company out of state to a conservation group. The matter of , repairs and tesponsibility of the cost thei*eo^is being examined by authorities.
