c Books for Young Adults * Today's teenage reader has an extensive variety o( books to choose from. Years ago, the choice was pretO ly much limited to Money Drew, the Portly Boys, w 'classics' and 'adult' books, Actually, the teens were not really deprived, as the 'adult' books of yesteryear O '•ere rather innocuous by today's standards While the Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, and similar books are still popular with the younger teens, there 0 has emerged a platoon of authors who write books for 'young adults'. One of the best known may be the versatile Judy Blume whoee ft's Not the End of the World has become a standard. Many of the writers devise plots which deal with the problems of today’s life - divorced parents, drugs teenaged pregnaifcles, etc., while others use the ageold formulas of unrequited love, misunderstandings, sibling rivalries and competition. Some of the prolific writers are Paul Zindel, Julia Cunningham, Hilda Colman and Norma Klein. Wylly Folk St. John has an interesting series of mystery books. Depending on the reading ability and interesta of the young adults, appropriate books can be found in every category. Don't overlook old favorites from the past - the Anne o/ Green Gables books by L.M. Montgomery, Big Red, by Jim Kyergoerd, the Kipling books. Treasure Island, Dickens. \ The books which we call 'classics' today, and are on many school reading lists (which sometimes turns students off) are those which have appealed to many generations of readers.
