Linwood Takes St. Hoekey Tourney
CAPE MAY - The local Civic Affairs Departmentconducted its Second annual Youth Street Hockey Tournament this past weekend in convention hall, where six teams participating from the tricounty area included Cape May, Somers Point, Middle Township, • Avalon, Wildwood and Linwood. After Saturday^ action only three teams remained — Cape May and Linwood, both undefeated, and Wildwood, out of the loser bracket with one loss. * THREE TEAMS were eventually eliminated in this double-elimination shootout — Middle Township dropped two straight after winning their first games and Avalon and
Somers Point were erased with consecutive losses. Linwood outshot and outdetenscd Cape May in a grueling championshif) round. Sunday morning to capture the tournament championship, 1-0. For their outstanding efforts they earned individual arid team trophies from the sponsoring City of Cape
May Mike O'Donnel scored the only goal. WILDWOOD staggered through the loafer’s bracket gauntlet to garner third place and a team trophy. James Penn and Charles Frederick manned the scorers table throughout the tournament; officials were John Vogel, Steve Steger and Dino Velli.
Jug-handle
j (From Page 1) Game of Chicken someday becoming a matter of Truth or Consequences, or worse, You Bet Your Life, for some unsuspecting motorist. And because he is a member of the township Mayor’s Advisory Council, Mr. von Schlichten has somewhat of an added civic incentive to see that something is done. The dangerous intersection has been the topic of discussio^ at a couple of recent meetings of the advisory group. Following one of these sessions, von Schlichten drove home his concern in a letter to John McCarthy, resident, in-fcounty state traffic engineer. ••MANY TIMES THE (Jug] handle is filled with two lines of traffic stopped by the red traffic signal,” he wrote the engineer. "As the two lanes of the road narrow into one lane less than 50 yards beyond the light, the change to green is considered by many to be an invitation to a Game of Chicken with the result of many a near imiss or accident, certainly a lot of ruffled tempers.” Coincidentally, engineer McCarthy’s been keeping his eye on the jug-handle for about three months. It is an informal (albeit knowledgeable) study, one he began after noticing the skid marks in the area. During gatherir^gs of the Mayor's Advisory Council, citizen von Schlichten had recommended to mayor Tom Clydesdale — and later in his letter to the traffic engineer — that one or, preferably, two alternate feed signs be placed at the light as a warning to westbound motorists of the squeeze that lies ahead. MR. MCCARTHY ISN’T certain what the eventual remedy-will be — whether it ■ will involve redesigning the Intersection from ane engineering standpoint, or merely changing or moving traffic signs or other signals. While he couldn't provide an improvement timetable, the traffic engineer did
emphasize that various alternatives are being studied. "It will be a matter of time before it i? determined which alternative is correct," the state’s man said. Resident van Schlichten may be bearing that in mind today, tomorrow or the next day when he approaches the intersection and hears the motorist in the car next to him gunning his motor as the light's-about to turn. Rescue Units (From Page 1) Service National Guard Battalion. The first joint training session ever for the three groups of organizations, it is designed to familiarize rescue personnel with the proper safety and operational procedures involving emergency evacuation helicopters. The program and demonstration is considered "an extremely newsworthy item" by Lt. Col. George Springer, commanding officer of the National Guard battalion. THE HELICOPTER EVACUATION of seamen injured at sea and the helicopter transport of severely burned patients initially treated at Burdette Tomftn Hospital has been accomplished from the National Guard helipad in past years. Joseph CrOuch, captain of the Cape May Rescue Squad, is coordinating the Cqpe^ Atlantic rescue squads. "There may be a time when you will be required to work with or around helicopters, and you can be forearmed with very valuable knowledge to better protect yourself and also your patients," Crouch has informed his rescue squad peers from the two-county area, about the demonstration. In addition to demonstrations ,bf emergency rescues, and helicopter landings, Saturday’s three-hour training session will include proper use of helipads, and familiarization with helicopters, Coast Guard duties aboard helicopters and equipment.
