Heya
Lantern 23 December 81
CONGRATULATIONS to 6th-grader Sheryl Sheppard for being selected as the Chamber of Commerce’s first student of the month. A student at the Consolidated School, Sheryl was presented a plaque by freeholder Gerry Thornton at a school assembly Nov. 30, and recently was invited to attend the Chamber's annual installation dinner where she was recipient of a savings bond. The bond was presented by Stewaj'i' Millard, project chairman and vice president of the township Chamber. WHILE ANNUAL school elections are still a feW months away, a number of names are already being tossed about as potential candidates for the three seats up for grabs on the Elementary School Board. Looks like the three incumbents — Ralph Bakley, Jam os Marsden and Bart Russell — will have a good fight on their hands if they seek re-election. CLAUDIA HAMMER was recently elected to a one-year term as vice president/secretary of the Municipal Clerks' Asso. of Cape May County. Membership includes the municipal and deputy clerks in all 16 county municipalities as well as the clei’k of the Board of Freeholders. Mrs. Hammer — along with president-elect Barbara Camp of Upper Twp. and treasurer-elect Ethel Filet qT Wildwood Crqst — was mstalled at a Dec. 2 Association dinner at the Lodge in North Wildwood. r ’ ALTHOUGH twp. voters have a strong reputation both locally and statewide for being unpredictable when they go to'the polls, their unorthodox methods

has received a vote of confidence from the local minority party leader. Democratic leader Pat Calfina — who before ftioving to the township was heavily involved in Philadelphia politics — commented recently that local voting patterns seem to indicate that voters consider who and what they’re voting for before pulling the lever. "I have to give the people credit for thinking about their vote," she said. "People -doWn here don’t just’ vote — they think about it.” • * « MEMBERS OF the Lower Township Republican Club have elected Erma resident George Martin president for the coming year. His only opponent in the election was Nina Senlick of Villas. Other officers elected at the club’s Dec. 3 meeting are first vice president Raymond Beck (N. Cape May); second vice president Nick Raspa (Villas); third vice president Peggy Spencer (Town Bank); secretary Debl de la Cretaz (N. Cape May); treasurer, Cass Clark (N. Cape May); sergeant-at-arms Lou Russo (Villas) and 3-year trustee Amelia Ruben (N. Cape May).. • • • DOG OWNERS will hftve to pay an additional $1 to license their pets beginning in January. The Township Committee passed an ordinance Dec. 14 that raises, the licensing fee froth 13 to $4. / , s Under township regula-
tions, all dogs over 6 months old must be licensed. Failure to comply can result in a fine of up to $50 for each offense. * * * If you happen to use the township Recreation Center on weekends, better note on your calendar thqt the facility will be closed over the Christmas and New. Year’s holiday. The center will closb at 4p.m. Dec. 24 and remain shut thqu Dec. 26. It will also close Dec. 31 at 4 p.m. and remaip closed thru, Jan. 2. WHILE MANY school districts and local municipalities are finding it difficult to make ends meet under their budget caps, elementary schools superintendent Ed Campbell reported recently his district is operating $65,000 below its 1981-82 budget cap. Campbell told members of the school board that the budget building process this year — as it has since 1976 — will be a "hassle.” Reporting on a recent trip t(* Trenton, the Superintendent noted that administrators have been informed by the commissioner of education that state aid to be granted individual distriris durong thfe next is not ybt "firm." , The figures (aid) will probably change," Campbell said, warning r the board members they will probably work up a budget and than find it has to be changed when aid figures are finalized in Trenton.
