Good Titwt for Hard Tijnc* Thfet wa* the theme of a mesaage I watched on TV- Christmas day The minister that preached that MtTnon really had it all together, because he said. "Count your blessings when you think you've got it toiigh If you've got your health you'-re waf out in front" I guess we all have to acknowledge .that in\j9Bl things have taken a tarn • towards the rougher side But we Americans have had many different times in our history when we've faced dire crises, and we’ve always had the toughness and ingenuity to come'back a little better than we were before IN THIS, our New Year edition. I’d like to look ahead.and prophesy what I Ihink will, happen in our . fishing worlfl in 1982 I studied the new Farmers Almanac at} much as I could during the week before Christmas, and now

I’ll try to look Info the crystal ball and see what this new season holds* for us If I ignore all the economic, factors for this next year I'd be foolish We've got a lot of new problems that are sure to affect our fishing stene Gas and diesel fuql are going to be high priced, so some . fellows will have a harder time getting out there fishing. But with typical American spirit we'll be there somehow Don’t ask me how—I'm just a fisher- * man—but we'll be there, just as the fish will be there Nature doesn't change, because economic factors don't effect nature. All we have to do is take advantage of them All of God's wonders will be present, and they follow their own laws. We've got to ^recognize that, andrealize 'it's there for the taking’. I'll be a year older, and maybe I won't be there as often, but there's a new breed of fishermen coming along

WsMl imiMfr who will. I didn’t miss too much this year because I looked at it positively. I’m going’ to try the same thing

this year. .

WELL, HERE GOER. As the sun crossed the line this year the wind was blowing Northwest, which means that (in my opinion) we can expect basically about the Sknfc kind of weather pattarns we had in 1981 I expecT\t‘o see Boston mackerel show early again—that is early in March, and go- on thru to ’April. (Sorry, but it doesn't look like Cod are going to be with uaitys^y^ar.) Once morec they’re "bn the downward trend of their

cycle.

I’m hoping for an early spring, and some good

fishing weather that should make the mackerel season better than last year. The big blues will follow right behind those Bostons, because their population is growing each year. In fact, they could very well dominate the fishing scene because they are not being sought commercially.' Right after they show in April, there will be big weakfish coming in with the black drum. It’s hard to predict just how long these big yellow-tails will hang around, because they were with us a much shorter time in '81 than they were in '80, and a lot of people think they’re on the decbne. I look for tne first drum to be taken about April 19th this year. T[»e

moon is earlier, and the tides are in apogee then. We'll probably find those big hqmpbacks further up. in* the Bay this yeat\ v because the salinity factor is still with us^ and with the drought its moving further up the Bay. I LOOK for flounder fishing to improve next year, and also summer weakfishing. Offshore in the canyons the yield-will still be heavy in white marlin. Blue marlin and big-eye tuna catches will continue to grow. Yellow fin tuna catches will be big again, but blue fin tuna will be on the scarce side due to overfishing by the Tuna clippers. I dbn't see any big. iraprovepient on the striper

scene. I think more people will try to get in on the fishing scene next season, because it will be the one sport that helps you get away from your problems. I look foi- more sharing,' and better catches., NOW. I KNOW I’m going to be accused of being an eternal optimist with all these predictions, but I’ve always contended that if you’re going to be an angler you’ve got to be optimistic. You’ve gofto have faith. Besides, after 1981, we’ve got nowhere to go but UP In the meantime, may I wish you—one and allr-a Happy New Year, and a 1982 season full of fishing experiences.
