Caring For Gift Plant COURT HOUSE - According to Larry Newbold, Cape May* County . Agricultural Agent, there are a few things to consider if you are the recipient of a holiday gift plant. If you have received a plant as a gift, hopefully the purchaser selected for a you a healthy, Insect-free pUint, with many flowers still to open, that you can place in an appropriate environment. Often plants have a tag that will suggest the best environment, and routine cultural practices. Follow the directions. AVOID PLACING your plants in locations where warm, dry air blows over them, such as near heating registers or on .radiator cqvers. Your plantlwiirprobably require fairly high light levels. In the chosen location, you can hold jtour hand over the plant and, if you do not see a distinct shadow, the light levels will probably be too low for' flowering plants. If the plant is small, enough and your home has low humidity levels, as most do in the winter, you can .cover the bottom of a tray with gravel and add a spiall amount of water (not enough to cover the gravel), letting the pot sit , on the gravel above tbe water. T»»e plant should not stand in the water, but the moisturt! beneath it will raise thft humidity near the plant. DO NOT Atj^nv plants

to become excessively dry. Excessive dryness often leads to the loss of older foliage. Also, when it dries out, soluble salt levels may increase to a point where root damage occurs. Try to keep the medium uniform-' \ ly moist. Symptoms of injury from high soluble salts may appear as marginal chlorosis, leaf yellowing and dropping, and death of the. roots. Resist the temptation to fertilize you plant. Nutri : tional levels supplied by the grower are adequate at reduced interior light
