OCEAN CITY-The City has agreed tt> join the Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority’s solid waste recycling program At Thursday’s City Council meeting, a $35,000 contract was awarded to Mar-Tee Contractors to pick up source separated aluminum and newsprint at curbside. It paves the way for a Feb. I’start-up. Ocean City will formally join the Cafle May County Municipal Utilities Authority’s program Jan. 26 when it adopts the joint resolution on source separation and recycling. "THE POSITIVE action taken by the Ocean City council is a major Step forward in our county-wide recycling effort,” Ted O'Neill, solid waste manager said.
“We commend the council members for this very substantial commitment to recycling in Cape May County as a means of recovering resources heretofore disposed of in. a landfill," O’Neill continued in a news release. “Our goal is to gather together as much recyclable material as possible. We Expect Ocean City to contribute 350 tons annually of newsprint and aluminum. This will greatly increase our market leverage and the resulting financial returns to our participating communities will make the operation more economical.” CITY COUNCIL president Nicholas Trofa commented, “I believe that recycling helps to protect our environment. It is
economically sound and environmentally desirable." A longtime recycling advocate, Councilwoman Jeanne Clunn remarked, "Recycling is essential to the survival of civilization, in my opinion. We have been burying ourselves in trash. This is the only answer. I’m pleased that Ocean City has joined." • The recycling of newsprint isn't a new activity in Ocean City. According to City Councilman Herbert Brownlee, the Lions Club has collected newsprint for many years and given the proceeds to its most familiar charitable project, the Institute for the Blind. Bht the Lions Club program hasn’t been operational since a fire burned out the
collection center several months ago. “UNDER THE terms ot the contract," O’Neill explained, “Mar-Tee Contractors will provide twice-a-month pick-up service at curbside for aluminum and bundled newspriht and deliver it to a transfer point which will be an adjunct to Ocean City’s recycling program because of the large quantity and the distance from the MUA’S recycling center at the former Menhaden plant site on Route 47, east of the Parkway." Communities already participating in the recycling program include Stone Harbor, Sea Isle City, North Wildwood, and Wildwood.
