COURT HOUSE - Penn sylvania and New Jersey anglers took most of the prizes in the 46th annual Cape May County Fishing.' tournament, it was announced by Freeholdej'Anthony T. Catanoso. director of the County Department of Public Affairs. Judges for the tournament met earlier this month at the Lodge Restaurant, North Wildwood, to' select the winners in the 30 categories. Winners will be notified by mail and will receive Penn Fishing Rfeel prizes for. their awardwinning fish. WHILE MOST of the winners came from Pennsylvania and New Jersey, Freeholder Catanoso said three of the winners came from New York, Ohio and Tennessee, and that a number of other states were represented in the more than 2,000 entries received in the tournament. In all 75 winners were selected by the panel. The rare fish division honors went to Jonathan Botkin, 13, who lives at 503 W. Poplar Ave., West Wildwood. Botkin’s fish, a two-ounce small mouth hog choker, was weighed in at Al and Dan’s Bait and Tackle, North Wildwood. The fish, a member of the sole family, ranges all along the East Coast, but was considered a winner in the rare fish division since it was the first entry of its' kind in the 46-year history of the tournament.

TWO ANGLERS tied for first prize in the bluefish division with 18 3/4 lb. bluefish. Rufus Gaul or Earleville, Md., and Dr. A. Romeo, of Ocean City, entered the prize-winning slammer blues. Increased interest was noted by the judges in the offshore fishing categories More tuna, albacore, king mackerel, bonito, white and blue marlin and wahoo were reported. IN THE KINGFISH (north whiting) division, a mother and son fishing combination took priztes. First place honors in the kingfish division went to Clarance Turner, of Court House with a 1 lb. 8'2 oz. kingfish The 47th annual County Tournament is already under way. The year-round tournament closes Dec. 31. One of the oldest tournanfents of its kind in the country, the event is sponsored by the County Board of Freeholders.
