COURT HOUSE - Cape May City Manager Fred Coldrenhas followed up his avowed displeasure with Ihe Cape May County MUA by calling on the county Board of Freeholders not t,o point John .Vinci to Ihe : MUV Mr. Vinci iswirrently chairman of the aulfiShty. Mr. Coldren has been Ihe most outspoken among municipal officials who are unhappy with proposed rales for sewage treatment advancejFby the MUA. Offrom several palities recently closed doors to apparently map a strategy to contest the proposed rates. At the same time, however, leaders from some other municipalities have expressed faith in the MUA. IN A LETTER dated Monday fio the county governing body, Coldren called Mr Vinci a spendthrift who must be replaced “with a responsible; honast. objective and conservative-minded citizen." According to Coldren’s fetter, “Mr Vinci has none of these attributes Hetias proven to be a big spender with a ruthless disregard for the longrange financial effects of his grandois* ideas on Ihe prdpertyowners and taxpayers of
Cape MayJTounty. Continued the Coldren letter: “He has distorted and misrepresented fa’cLs about the charges and rates, has bullied and berated fellow MUA members when they dare to-disagree with him, and has attempted to intimidate municipal officials and citizens who are trying .to understand and get answers to legitimate questions about MUA plans or decisions. Because of Mr Vinci’s peYsohal at titude-and. actions, there is very little faith or trust in the MUA generally, and none in its leadership " ACCORIHNCi TO THE •('ape May’ manager, "the MUA desperately needs a . fresh and objective reappraisal at this time Many fear to speak up But-with the federal and state fun ding’cutbacks, we all know that many tens of millions of dollars in planned MUA spending can and must be saved before it’s too late "Cape May County can have proper wastewater treatmerft without crippling the economy only if Ihe Board of Freeholders acts now to change the big spen • ding philosophy epitimi/.ed by Mr. Vinci Please do not reappoint him,'’ Coldren concluded in his letter.
For Regional New Buses Top Priority
ERMA — In a move to upgrade Its existing transportation system, the Lower Cape May Regional School Board is planning to .receive bids Jan. 28 for two 54-passenger school buses. The bids will be received at R p in in the bigh school library here. At the same , time, the board will also consider selling to the highest bidder two 54-passenger buses — one 1974 Chevrolet with a Bluebird Body and a 1972 Ford with a Superior Body. ALTHOUGH MONEY was set aside To purchase buses in the 1981-82 budget, it was cut after voters defeated the proposed budget in April. The board now plans to fund the purchase of one bus thru money available in
miscellaneous revenue. According to board Finance chairman Ruth Billmeyer, this includes interest the district has earned by in vesting available money in short-term certificate of deposits. Additional money is being set aside in' the 1982-83 budget to provide for the second bus. “The buses are needed desperately because of maintenance problems.’’ Billmeyer said, noting that buses are Ihe board’s highest priority at this time. SUPERINTENDENT Ephraim Keller reported earlier that economic costs of maintaiping buses skyrocket after about 85,000 miles — a point district buses reach in about 8 years.
