Spark of Learning Pupils Plug Into Computers
Barn Burned COLD SPRING - A wood stove was allegedly the cause of a fire that gutted a two-story bam on Seashore Rd hDre Thursday night The blaze broke out about 8:20 p.m. when the stove apparently touched off some furniture stored tn the barn. The building owned by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Vanaman. escaped with little exterior damage According to reports, the call was answered by fire fifehters. from both West Cape May and Town Bank, while the Cape May Fire Dept. was v utilized as a backup unit. The fire was extinguished' in less than two hours.
by M'Ellen Rowland AVALON - Students at the Avalon Public School' are being turned on to computers. What is more, the calculating machines are being used both to complement remedial teaching and as a learning incentive for the unusually gifted pupil. . John McDonough, coordinator of Special Services and guidance counselor at the school, explained how it came about: FOR YEARS. all children received the same type of education. In 1976 the state Thorough'and Efficient’ Education Act went into effect and has made great changes in teaching ovfer the past five yeats Actually, the Avalon school had already been using many methods to see that each student received special education tailored to meet his or her individual hedifev but the T&E law was the inpetus for ofher schools Ho follow suit. \ / Annually Avalon runs a free summer school with remedial courses in math and heading and others for students who wish to enrich their education. The latter' courses include Study of careers. Book writing, Creative art. Construction of a project and making scale models. THE PUBLIC is made aware of the availability of this schooling thru
newspaper adyprtisemeots, at the Avalon Infoml» on Center and via Realtors as a way of encouraging summer rentals. Class instructors stimulate ^ career awareness by taking studenfs to visit local businesses such as bakeries garages, real estate offices, groceries, card and gift shops, casinos, banks, as welt i the police and fire depaj ments. The summer school actually kicked off thfc special education for superior students who one year ran their own car-wash business on a shared-profit basis. ANTHONY ZURAWSKI. former owner of the Whitebrier Hfltel. became interested in the school’s special education program and made a *2,000 endowment towards its furtherance. With this gift the school purchased its first computer. The school has since managed to acquire a second, a TRS-80 model. These computers have enabled teachers to give S er learners hours of ediai tutelage in both h and reading skills, and inspired gifted students tinvork to the extent of their abilityON FEB. 2ND the scholars issued their first computerized newspaper. (For some time the 6th grade students have been
putting out a magazine which they take home to their parents.) Contributors included Christin Dodd, AngelS Dell'Orefice, Ron Hudanich, Shawn Rudden, Chris Mingues, Ann Davison, Nichole Reichard and Abby Fagan. We wat* ched two gifted students working out a project on the more sophisticated machine jointly. The dther day sixth graders Angela Dell’Orefice and Bobbie Toe Sikora were demonstrating the use of the computer to a younger child. The computer thus enables students to be teachers too. / /, 50’S Dance 1 • 3 '' By Riwanis
