Committee Eyed to Plan Moth Attack School Bd. Will Meet

Although he admits there is “no doubt” going tdlje a problem with gypsy moths this year; Township planner Joe Zahora indicated early last week that he doesn’t believe the creation of a volunteer committee or commission to handle .

year’s gypsy moth spraying programs. Such a committee is also being considered in Middle

Township.

ACCORDING TO Mr. Zahora, however, the plan wouldn't work because there’s a lot of “behind the

the situatfon is the way to' scene" work that has to be

solve the.problem.

The planner’s comments come in the wake of a recent suggestion by Committeewoman Peggie Bieb^rbach-Fulcher that some kind of a committee of interested residents from different parts of the Township should be formed to determine what areas should be included in this

done. Much of it is administrative — such as determinihg the exact boundaries of the areas to be sprayed and making sure every owner in the vicinity with improved property is notified. "Unless you spray the whole township your going to get flack," the planner said. "If a commission is formed it will be the first and only year," he added, noting that people serving on the board will probably receive so much flack that they wouldn't want to serve again. bursement from the state Will be less, the Township Committee at its Feb. 8 meeting passed a resolution indicating to the state that it plans to participate in its 1982 spraying program. The deadline for applying to the state was Feb. 15. But although the resolution specifies that the chemical Seven is to be used, Committeewoman Fulcher argued that the pesticide Bacillus thuringiensis (bt) — a national barteria should be considered instead. She strongly advocated it use because it doesn’t kill the natural predators of the moth. SEV1N HAS reportedly been linked iri the past with the occurrence of birth defects and the destruction of bees and other pollen carrying insects. But other published reports say the birth defect claims are unsubstantiated. According to Mayor Tom Clydesdale, while the state sprayed 700 acres in the township last year, this year only 143 acres will be sprayed. He also rxjted that

while 50 per cent of the cost was reimbursed by the state in 1981, the Yeim-. bursement this year will be only 20 per cent or less. “This caterpillar is driving people crazy," Clydesdale said, pointing out that it’s goirig to be an expensive proposition, he added, "we’ll appropriate • more money if necessary." LAST YEAR THE state program was supplemented by a township spraying, program. Such a program will probably have to be implemented again this year — the size of the effort depending on how much money can be. budgeted. Committeewoman Fulcher noted last week that Middle Township has also opted to spray this year, a move that may help this township in its fight against the moth. She indicated that she plans to look into thq formation of a committee to determine the local areas that most desperately need to be sprayed. "We have to band together to fight the caterpillar," she said.
