public relations, marketing, computerbased word processing and fund raising. Jack has experience in hospital management, and is a former radio and TV news commentator. Bob Smeltzer was the first speaker. He explained the reasoning behind the fifth expansion of the hospital (expected to cost about $33 million). Overcrowded conditions, lack of space, and xtrairf onv the staff — even before the. summer crowds—are well known. Jack I^Boubty explained that over 30. years ago Burdette Tomliitymade an initial rontribuHon of $fe5,000 and asked othVrs to match it. Thf institution was founded—with the help of many—and residents were provided with local hospital care for the first ^time. Since 1950 — when there were 56 employees and 65 beds — it has grown to the point where there are now 500 employees and' 171 beds. The staff includes more than 100 highly trained physicians. - ' • * • ALEXANDRA and John Kokonos of 119th St. and Znd'Ave., gave an engagement party for their daughter Mary and her financee, Rick Ensslen, son of Jane and Hank Ensslen of Avalon, on Valentine’s Day. THIS NEWSPAPER’S Adopt a Pet campaign made at least one family extremely happy and found a home for a loving French poodle. Rita Goode (Mrs. Bruce R.) of 88th St., Avalon, called to ask if she could pick up a copy of last week’s Herald at our home. My spouse said "Natch" but almost went into -shock when she said she'd arrive at 6 a.m. the. next ifiorning (he considers we’re pushing to breakfast at 10 a.m.J. Rita, of course, had been kidding and stopped about noon. The Goodes have had two magnificent German Sheperds, which unfortunately have mounted the Piece of the Rock golden staircase to Dog Heaven. They recently decided it’s time to get another pet that will require less ekercise. Through the Adopt a Pet program sponsored by the newspaper, they contacted the County Animal Welfare Society and Wound up with an adorable, wellmannered French poodle named Barney Google.

NICE to know our neighbors Ellic and Harry Fry of 85th St. should be on their way home from their trip to Orlando, Naples and Key Largo. It’s swell knowing your friends are having fun while you’re shoveling snow, but having a good neighboj; awdy is a little like missing a front tooth — you’re painfully aware of the absence only while it
lasts. • • •
WE ARE delighted with the heat our kerosene stove has provided us this -year. Can’t imagine what our utility bills would have
been without it! That's why we couldn't understand why the city of Phila was making such a fuss about the safety element. We ’ brought this to the attention of someone more knowledgeable and he asked us where we store the fuel. When we told him he replied, "that’s just the point. They're not afraid of thfe units themselves, they're afraid of fuel storage and Ifick of ventilation around the unit. They eat up the oxygen you know." We had been warned by the instructions oever to go to sleep while the unit is still burning. But as our friend said, "How many people do you know that read and follow instructions?"
