——r ■■ THIS WEEK was a tough one to write about fishing, but on the day after the snow melted I walked out my back door and saw some of the bulbs I had planted in Nov, poking their heads out. It reminded me that spring is on its way arid it's time, to start looking over various items of fishing tackle that has been forgotten over the winter. Over the long weekend, Cape May County got a view of things to come as people with "cabin fever" got on the roads and headed for the Jersey Cape. All the motels were loaded up on the weekend, and people were calling all over trying to find a place to stay. I believe Cape May County is going to be in for an unprecedented tourist season this year because a lot of people have Canceled big trips due to the economic crunch. It looks like we’ll stand out as a tourist attraction because we'll be ideal for the family wanting one or two days at the shqre. We may still feel the middle of the week lull that was'new in 1»81, but overall, we should be in for a good season. I met Jack Elliott, of Erma* and Paul Munday up at Sears Town Mall last week. They were talking about getting their boat ready for drum season, and whatever else would show before that. It won’t be long before we’ll be hearing about getting ready for mackerel if this weather moderates, and already the first showing of shad in the upper tributaries of the Delaware has started the lobster House in Qape May to mention it on their menu. THIS WEEK in the mail I received a card from Captain Steve Ilea announcing that he and his party boat Blvo will be located in a

.OCIAN AND DAYl SOUNDINGS l Sy Soyd Tyliwg

the Stone Harbor intersection on a Friday evening. It’s like Grand Central Station at high noon during the

boating season.

About 10 years ago a group of us enthusiastic boatmen triefc to get this

new place. Capt. Steve will now be docking at the Miss Chris fishing center directly in back of John. Pappas restaurant, so you’ll want to turn right instead of left when you're looking for

him. * ... This fishing center isX .through, and it', was

starting to develop into a mecca for party and charter boats because the Big Jim II is right next to the center, and around the corner Capt. ^Frank Cassady’s Lady Grace, and Capt. Bob BennetCs ,Tana are docked and ready to go spring fishing. We will have two fishing centers in Cape May this season as the South Jersey Fishing Cen'ter springs into action with their array of head boats and sport fishing boats. Everything should start coming Uxlife in those

areas real soon.

Befor'e I forget, Capt. Steve put two phone numbers on his cord - for reservations: 609-465-9333(Home) and 609-8®4-5445(Dock). He’s also installing a new diesel generator for convenience and safety. It won’t be long before all these party boats start their 1982 advertising, so we’ll try to keep £oli informed where they’re,

located.

IN LAST WEEK’S paper, our editor wrote a lead article on a proposed boat ramp emptying into the CaJje May Canal, and he was perfectly right on his observations. To launch boats in the canal from a ramp would be like trying to unload new cars on the Garden State Parkway at

Library III Victor, 3-1

CAPE MAY - Library III struck quickly with good ball rhovement and went on to a three games to one victory over Cape Island Sailing Cruise 15-8, 15-9, 14-16, 15-5; in men’s volleyball. Jack Castello, Ted Benecki and Mike Moore teamed up to barely outplay the Cape Island stalwarts - Tomy Mendo, Bruce Pritchard tmd Ernie Troiano. WHIPPOORWILL Ca mpground, by virtue of the defense and hitting of Tom Swenk and Bob Bisbane, overcame the fiesty Lighting Dimensions Squad 15-11. 15-6, 13-15, 150. Mie Bonner, Pete Kakayonnis and Bruce

Waterman were excellent overall for Lighting Dimensions. Lighting Dimensions bounced back to jolt Dekelco by winning the first three games of. their match before dropping the finale. The winners were paced by the fearsome serving trio of Bruce Waterman, Bill Forest and Frank Vogel. Mike Kelly and the McKinley brothers were the heart of the Dekelco attack. defeated because even th€n the backup‘of trailers artd cars parking on Bayshore 'Rd. in North Cape May was unthinkable. There did, however, surface at that time another idea whi^h has merit. That was. the thought of establishing a ramp at N'orbury’s Landing in*l5el Haven, in the Villas. ItAvas workable, but it was defeated because of the boat liveries and pairs along the Bay,, it was thought they;, would be harmed by a relocation of

their customers.

Whether that still exists today is debatable, but there is no doubt that launching- facilities are still needed in Cape May County wherever parking is available. It will probably have to be done by free enterprise though, because the days of local governments providing this service are long gone. In fact from the look of things, we’re going to get very little help from government in any protective project this year. We’B be lucky if they keep our inlets open, let alone provide luxuries! WE ALSO have another very serious problem to deal with this pear. A touch of this came to light last week as former mayor Charles Masciarelle was robbed at gun point by a trio of men who acted like pros. Thankfully the entire police forc^ in the Wildwoods responded, and no one was harmed. This' was possible because it is a slow time on the beaches, and the force was available But one shudders to think what would have happened if this caper had taken place on Memorial Day weekend. I have long been amazed A&J In Shutout In Cape May Youth Hockey Playoff action last week, tope ceded Axelsson & Johnson shutout the talented C-View Inn, 4-0. Jon Axelsson powered in three goals scoring one in each period and Darren Hickock scored once to lead the aggressive A&J onslaught. The C-View‘Inn was paced by Mike Cronin and Rob Hollingsead Islanders Sink The Coast Guard Undefeated and untied Cape May Islanders opened their Championship bid with a 12-2 playoff blitzing of the U.S. Coast Guard during Men’s Street Hockey league action last

week.

The Islanders roared to a 7-0 first period lead as five different players tainted goals and coasted in for the win. Cape May's scorers were Bill Ho|t (3 goals), Mike Moore (2 goals), Frank Brietbach (2 goals), John vogel (2 goals). Bob Huff. Steve Stcger and Kevin Sherman. The Coast Guard got their offense from Doug Walcott and Paul Petella.

at the thinking used on budget caps that cut our police, fire, and rescue squads while other nodsafety jobs are allowed to rei^ain. It seems to me that we need an awareness of what these dedicated peo- , pie do to prov: 'e for our . safety, and w*. n .'d to switch priorities in local governments for our Swn well being. All ove- New Jeraey crime watch unites are starting up, and^other volunteer groups are com- . ing into being because of government cutbacks But it still seems to me that cutbacks in our police, fjre and rescue squads is a folly in light of the many new visitors we entertain. With the.nearness of casinos and their elemertt. and the extensive drug traffic that is in our County,* very little study i$ given to taking care of dur public servants. SOME of our beachfront communities are involved in a big debate over beach fees to offset the costs of maintaining our strands, but how much thought is given, to protecting us who live here? How about -trying to get some revenue in each municipality to keep up our police, fire and rescue squads? Why not make our tourists pay these costs? We need creative thinking now more than ever, or we're going to drown in a sea of crime that is hot our making. Coed V’ball Due CAPE MAY - The Annual Coed Volleyball league begins here March 17. The organizational meeting is 8 p.m., March 2 at the elementary school For additional information call the Dept, of Civic Affairs at 884-8411 ext. 20 or 27. A&J Earns Top Seed In Hockey CAPE MAY - In Youth ‘ Street Hockey Axelsson and Johnson edged out Dellas Stores for first place. A&J earns top seeding in the championship playoffs which started Feb. 18 in Con-, vention Hall. The final regular season action saw Dellas scale A & J 6-5 in an exhilarating overtime shootout. Jim Hawthorne rapped in four goals in an outstanding performance, including the ’winner' in overtime to pace Dellas. Dave Zimmerman and Joey Hawthorne scored the other Dellas goals. A&J SCORING came from Darren Hickock (2 goals), John AxeUson, Bob Calkins and John Steinmeti, who scored with only 15 seconds remaining lo send the game into overtime. The following night in the regular season finale Dellas was stunned 5-0 by Cape May Lumber to ruin their hopes for a first place finish. The ‘Lumber Company's’ Mike Klineberger and Jim Dunn rattled the nets for 2 goals each and Rich Jlarroo scored once to complete the shutout .Y Remaining playoff dates are Feb. 28 and March 1 and 4.
