RIO GRANDE - “Cape May County is out in front of the rest of the state in solid waste recycling efforts," Mary Shiel, administrator. mented.
THE STATMB director of recycling joined dozens of Hate, county and local officials in opening and touring the facility located on Rio Grande Boulevard in Middle Township. Freeholder Director Anthony T. Hathaway, who spoke on behalf of the authority, urged support for Uie recycling program from those municipalities not yet participating and explained that present plans would expand the Phase I tajjlity.to Include a resource recovery unit aTThe Site of the interim sanitary landfill to be constructed in the northern part of the county
by 1986.
•RECYLING REALLY is taking material that we’ve been throwing-away for years, collecting it, and reselling it to use it qgain, perhaps tn another form," Hathaway remarked. "There is no huge expenditure of money involved in this phase. It is something every community
can do."
The work force at the facility is supplied by the Jersey Cape Diagnostic, Training and Rehabilitation Center, Inc., whose president is also an MUA commissioner, Roy Gillian of Ocean City. Gillian said.
"The facility provides a vehicle of employment to the disabled persons served by Jersey Cape. The MUA is proud to be able to offer that opportunity in addition to the beneficial environmental results of recycl-
ing.”
According to Ted O’Neill, County MUA solid waste manager, the recycling facility was "developed to encourage and support local community efforts to reduce their solid waste quantities, save natural resources, and protect the environment through recycling. This facility is designed. equipped and operated to receive sort, store and market 1290 tons of recyclable paper, glass.' and aluminum annually.-U is the first step in providing Cape May County municipalities and their residents with a permanent county-wide recycling and
resource recovery system.”
RECYCLING PROGRAMS are. established in Sea Isle City. S)one Harbor. North Wildwood, Wildwood and Ocean City. An office paper recycling effort has been implemented in many county offices by the County Planning Board, O’Neill reported. Dennis Township, West Cape May and Wildwood Crest have indicated they will join the cooperative program in the next several weeks. | Sea Isle City Mayor Dominic Raffa, who < attended the opening, remarked, “I think it’s great.Tm 1,000 percent behind recycling and happy that Sea Isle City was one of the fir^t to participate. The MUA’s facility has plenty of room to store material and
that’s important too."
. "Over 90 tons of glass, paper and aluminum have been delivered here and over 30 tons have already been marketed," the Solid Waste Manager stated. "It is our hope that all 16 municipalities in-the county will have active recycling programs by
this fall." •
