Our mystery anglers are back, and now we can report that Jack Osborne, and Len and Ruth Verity arrived home this week from Nonzamia, Mexico and Panama — and they . had quite a trip. Jack said' they caught eleven sailfish in Mexico and had nine more in Panama; and they had ddlphin fishing galore during the entire trip in Mexico. Sometimes they caught as high as 10 . dolphins a day, and they actually ran away from those fish at times; because they tore up all their

sailfish baits.

Jack was also telling me about catching ,blue runners that were really spor- , ting. In Panama. Ruth Verity got the prize though, a big striped marlin that took the jackjlot for the whole trip. He came up on •the linp Ruth was fishing, and was a redl "sater." They had one other shot at a J)ig marlin, but it jumped off. They fished a week in

the trawler Neptune. Andy Grace was talking with Royce Fulcher of North Cape May, who just returned ' from Hatteras, and while he was down there, Royce went out with some of his relatives net fishing in the ocean. They ran into a\big school of stripers way off the beach, and came in with a good catch. SLOWLY BUT surely our fishing fleet is-starting to put out some promotional material aimed at the coming season. Cpt. Jim Cicchltti is advertising that his Starlight will start sailing March 27, presumably for macljjerel. Cpt. Jim Solly, of the Fiesta is planning to start the first week in April as his kick-off time. Some of the other party boats will be coming out with dock timds real soon, but the promotional push of last season is noticeably lack-

ing.

Regardless of how anyone feels, however, the

Panama from 6 in the mor- • season will soon be uponbs, ning until 3 in the after- and then we'll find out what

DOWN SOUTH some of our local anglers are still doing well in sailfish. Cpt. Joey Drosea, who is fishing

Wally Laudeman's boat out of Jupiter Inlet, has really .mally serious persons into had a good season. Two red hot anglers - and the weeks ago he took his Jersey Cape comes .alive mother Norma out and got^ again. . * Hop o coiirioh 0 nHho- C no«». • A few of warm

is going to happen. As the weather warms, and the waters backon, a lot of fellows will , start thinking fishing, and Jhen that magical change will come about that transforms nor-

Winchester in Cape May for March 25 to their spring trip to Hatteras — so Spr-

ing is almost here.

I REALLY GOT a kick out of a recent letter I received from the American League of Anglers Inc. in Washington D.C. It was entitled D-J expansion bill newsletter, and the sub-bead read: “Survey of boaters favorable to Dingell Johnson Fund Expansion." They mentioned that they had polled 88 per cent of Louisiana boat owners, and that 69 per cent favored a 3 per cent tax on boats and motors if the proceeds were used to improve fishing and boating oppor-

tunities. «

I think that laughable part is how they got the participants from a state which has 4,203,472 population. First they got a computer tope from the license section of Louisiana Dept, of Wildlife and ‘Fisheries, and they selected only those people that used their boat for pleasure, and had a boat under. 25 feet in length. Then to make it valid, they contacted Dr. Vernon Wright, of the Louisiana Stat^ Univ. Dept, of Experimental Strftjstics, and with this, and,Mr. > Henry # Gauthier’s guidance, every 325th boat owner was extracted. THIS PRODUCED 800

names which wasn’t sufficient for the survey since not all the registrants had - phones. An additional 483 names were obtained by extracting every 668th boat. This final list of 1,283 people was used to obtain telephone numbers from the original registration cards. Over 35 per cent of the registration cards didn't contain telephone numbers, and the final list of boat owners to contact included 7$0 names located in 60 parishes, I did not make this up, its in the letter. They had 14 interviewers and they called between 7 & 9 p.m. from Aug. 24 and Sept. 2, 1981, and they actually reached 486 people who spoke for the 4,203.472 Louisiana populance. ‘ Sounds ridiculous doesn’t it? Well, that’s the \vay they make these polls., . Jj^y also listed the questiods, and they went like

this:

HOW MANY boats do you own? Have yqu used your .boat in the ^ast 12 months? Have you^ been fishing in the last 12 months? Do you ever .us* your boat for fishing? (On these two 430 people siid yes and 56 people said no. and that’s where the^r, got the 88 per cent). Do you fish in fresh water, salt.whter, or both? What kind of fish do you preferJo fish for? Do

you belong to a Bass club? (weren't many members). 5 At the present time in Louisiana a fisherman doesn't have to have a fishing license if he fished with a cane pole and live bait Are you in favor of all fishermen between tfie - agesjof 16-60 having to buy / a fishing license regardless of how they fish? (This got a yes by 261. but 3 said they had no opinion). What would you like to see done in Louisiana to improve' fishing? (37 said they'd like to catch more fish), What could the State do to improve your boating opportunities? (asked of nonfishermen). Are you aware that you have been paying a 10 per cent tax (federal) on rods, reels: and lures’for 30 years? (321 people were not, and I sure wasn't) In

Needlers II Cop Title

order to fund the inv provements that we' discussed earlier, would you favor a 3 per cent federal tax on a new boat and motor? (299 people said yes — probably to get the guy off the phone ) WHAT I'M driving at is this: They polled less than *~ M/10 of 1 per cent, and they asked leading questions, . ahd they arrived at the answer |hey wanted Then they, had nerve enough to say 88 per cent favored a tax It would really be laughable except for the fact that they take these polls an bonafide opinion from/ fellowsl f and it'sV can get fiiHftb^Nlfder to look into the quality of these pools — they sure

stink!
