When I woke up this morning (Friday) the sky was bright, which was different from the cold, black outdoors that usually greets me at 6:15 a.m.; then when I walked out the back door I saw the three crocuses by the step were showing their gold and purple colors. . A little later, as I.walked my dog before' going to work, the sun was really bright,, and suddenly I realized that this was the . fifst touch of spring; and I guess you could say that thus week really had the first promises' of good things to come as two of the days reached 60? ON, THURSDAY, afternoon I visited .the A 4 J fish docks and not a trawler was tied up there; and that's r unusual. I think every boat in 'the commercial fleet was out fishing; apd that's a sign that as soon ds the weather
gets- right the fishermen want to go. The Serf Wife was the only one in at Cold Spring, but Cpt. Richard has been out on a long ( trip while the other 1 fellows were laying in. • Down at Rosemen's Bbat ^Yard, Cpt. Frank Cafesady had the Grace up on the ways, and he-and Donald Roaeman were painting Ihe bottom. Cpt. Frank has just airived Back from Venice, Fla., and he f told me he went surf fishing there, and really enjoyed, it. He caught whiting (we Call' them kihgfish) sbeepshedd, and had a red-fish biting, and really enjoyed theaction. ON THURSDAY I came upon Randy Uaudeman, and Donald Roseman untangling one of Randy’s set nets. Cpt. Randy said he set the net up a creek on the Bayshore, and he caught four white perch and the

Some of the party boats will, start .to move this, weekend. Last week Cpt Hiram Thompson had some birdwatchers out on the Big Jinn and this Saturday Cpt. Al Dalinski is Starting on a regular schedule offshore for cod and pollack, and whatever else they can find. I believe Cpt! Hiram will be running the party. YOU KNOW WHEN I was a boy my Dad used to tell, me that our weather was affected by the Gulf Stream, and that as the Gulf Stream moved closer to us bur weather would get warmef ' Now, this was before the days of satellites and' tracking and monitoring systems, and it was just a theory he had picked up from captains like Essie Bolcr and Bunk Errlcson. but it turns out this reasoning was entirely correct in the general
sense.
It turns out that they've discovered by the use of satellite pictures that there are warm water ed«' that break off from the (Sp'lf Stream, and mov) shoreward . (Southwest); these are known as warm or anticyclonic eddies, and they move 2 to 4.5 nautical miles per day until they are reabsorbed by the Gulf Stream, Usually near Cape Hatteras. Then, there is the cold core or cyclonic eddy that moves offshore away from the Gulf Stream, and sinks to a depth of 1,250 to 1,750 fathoms, and these move in and out crossing the Gulf stream as they return moving in a
westerly course.
THE BASIC affect though is that both types of eddies contribute to environmental change in their specific area in terms of temperature, salinity, water motion. Since hb* such an effect on our weather, the National Earth Satellite Services (NESS) in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is the main agency involved with the tracking and monitoring of these eddies. Charts are made each week showing Geo-thermal locations of the Gulf Stream and water temperatures of the area from the stream to the beach. Charter boat captains, who want to get the jump on competition or assure their clients of more successful trips have been using the charts to pick prime fishing grounds, and determine whether a trip right to the Gulf Stream would be
feasible.
The weekly SS^.(sea, surface, temperature analysis) can be studied by \ the inshore fisherman to watch the progression^ of warm water in the spring which brings the mackerel, Wins First AVALON * Local gymnast Chris Dodd, a member of the Somers Point Center s Flippers girls gymnastic learn, placed first all around in a recent Class Illfconrtpulsery Zone t Meet for all of South Jersey -Miss Dodd look first on the balance beam, second in the floor exer-

I then got ill touch with Stewart Tweed,' our marine extension agent, who is stationed a< the extension office out on Dennisville Road. He put me in touch with Clif Flimlin, marine extension agent ajt the Ocean County Extension Office, agriculture center, Whiteville Road, Toms River, N.J. 08753. You can obtain these charts by writing to Gef; however, there muy be a charge for
them.
At any rate Gef will send you the marine advisory service bulletin that will .explain the eddies more specifically then I have,
