By Municipal Officials Trim Budget, Regional Board Told

ERMA — After being lold by resident at a public hearing last week that the district’s proposed $5.2*» million budget needs to be trimmed by at least 5 per cent, the Lower Cap? May Regional School Board agreed to postpone its adoption and try once more to find areas that can be cut • * A reconvened hearing was set for March 16 after the board listened last Wednesday night to the concerns df r sorhe 13 residents on hand for the budget hearing. Among those in attendance were Lower Township Committeewoman Peggie Bieberbach, West Cape May Mayor. Jack Vasser, and Cape May, City Manager Fred Coidren COLDREN CALLED on the board to trim the proposed 10 per cent budget hike down no more

than 5 per cent. Other v areas the board was asked to look into included' the 125,000 for b computer literacy course at the Teitelman Sthool, the purchase of new buses, insurance costs, need for additional staff, and the possibility of issuing user fee*, for all groups and individuals using school facilities. But superintendent Ephraim Keller indicated last Friday, that finding additional areas to cut .and still maintain acceptable education will be difficult. Asked if existing programs will be maintained at the current level should additional cuts be made, Keller responded “probably not.” The budget as introduced already eliminates five district employees, he noted, including at least two teachers — one in

The people told us politely they thought cuts could be •made, and we agreed to loolf into it." As of late last week, the superintendent could not state specifically where • cuts, if any, will be made. He indicated the board’s Finance Committee would study the issue at a meeting Marth 15 As proposed, the budget will include a cuirent expense total of about $4.9 million while capital outlay will be $25,000. The district's current total budget is about $4.8 million, with current expense making up just under $4.5 million and capital outlay totaling $10,000. REGIONAL’8 BUDGET — which covers the cost of operating the Lower. Cape May Regional High School and the Teitelman Junior High — calls for some $4 million,to be raised thru local taxes collected from the regional's three constituent districts — Cape May, West Cape may and Lower Twp. The amount to be raised by taxation is up about 9.8 per cent from last year’s $3,711,628 figure. Keller indicated that he can’t estimate exactly how much the tax rate will jump in the constituent district because he hasn’t received the latest figures in the changes of student population and ratables in each community: He acknowledged however, that figures he released to the board in January are probably wrong. Then he said that Cape May's tax rate would increase about 7 cents per $100 of assessed valuation, while the rates in Lower Township., and West Cape May would rise 6.4 and 6.5 cents respectively^ Last Vear, the regional tax was 81.5 cents per $100 of assessed valuation in Cape May, 90.9 cents per $100 of assessed valuation in Lower Twp. and almost $1.32 per $100 of assessed valuation in West Cape May.
