MUA Study Rejection called ‘Outrage’

f level

SWAINTON - Member, of the County Municipal Utilities Authority last Tuesday rejected a . proposal for spending 960,000 to study the feasibility of upgrading existing treat ment facilities in the Seven Mile Beach/Mkkife Region instead of constructing two hdw regional systems. < Subsequently a Sea Isle City commissioner called the MUA action an “outrage" and threatened legal se-

ction.

A week earlier, an MUA vote on the same proposal faded to ‘ gain approval following a tie-vote, with Commissibner Joakim Joanides absent. In last Tuesday's vote, Mr. Joanides voted against Ihe proposal along with commissioners Charles Hathaway and vice chairman Robert ; Anialone of Avalon—one of the communities whose governing body had recently gone on record favoring the study. SEA ISLE CITY Commissioner Gansert called the MUA decision rejecting

the proposed feasibility a study "an outrage, a slap in the face to local municipalities and the residents of Cape Jlay County". He* Mid that with the exception of MUA Commissioners John Vinci and Roy GUlian, the MUA officials had shown a lack of flexibility and sensitivity to the realities oTthese economic

times.

"The . eredibility gap widens between the authority and* local municipal officials," Mr. Gansert stated. "We need a general house cleaning that includes Pandulo Quirk Associates and staff of the

MUA.”

■ Gansert accused, the MUAV and PQA of misrepresenting the facts and realities of funding at their meeting with Sea I§le. Mr. John Federico of Sea Isle repeatedly told the MUA that fuhding would decrease dramatically and drive up user fees, but officials of the MUA and PQA insisted funding would con-

tinue at current levels and the project would be completed as planned, Gdnsert

noted.

"MUA OFFICIALS committed to the project than the service' are to provide,” com-

ited Gansert.

According to Gansert, this is evidenced by the MUA’s insistence on continuing a 9107 Million project on a segmented, inflationary basis in the face of funding reductions. They propose to initially connect Sea Isle to the Middle Township , Plant rather than the Stone HarborAvalon outfall to insure the total project and close the door to less costly alter-

natives. ,

Commissioner .Gansert said he will propose that Avalon and Sea Isle Officials and residents appeal to the state DEP and. Federal EPA for their intercession. He Mid he will also ask his fellow commissioners to authorize city solicitor Steve Scherzer, to prepare a suit against the

MUA.
