It Was Keith Seaman of Court House, who did that job Jack was away when this article ran, but Keith was here apd before the meeting he set me straight on that in no uncertain terms. In fact, the next day Jack was telling me that Keith kept insisting that fhey Weigh the drum in at Sam Albrecht’s, and that because of him the record now exists I'm sorry. n Charlie the Tuna Would-, * '/* ’ Love Jersey Anglers TRENTON — Results of a survey of the Garden State’s recreational big-game’fishery for tuna and marlin fiuring the summer of 1981 indicate that more than 4d.<XX) fish with a collected .weight of 2 million pounds were takfcn by New Jersey’s 800-plus recrea-’ tional boats that fish the off : shore canyons. The figures indicate the best tuna fishing on the East Coast the blue waters off New Jersey. Thf survey was conducted by the Marine Fisheries Administratioh and was designed to obtain information about the effort and catch of this Ijttle documented
fishery^
THE SURVEY covered the fishing grounds from 50 to 106 miles off shore where Canyons line the edge of the* continental shelf. In this arqa the warm blu? wajers of the Gulf Stream concentrate several species of tuna, white and blue marlin, swordfish, wahoo. dolphin and
makoshark. . (' ;
.Between May and October of 1981 there were an estimated 5,500 big game fishing Jrips by New Jersey boaters. By species, the. catch included: yellowfln tuna. 18,209; albacore tuna, 14.600; bigeye tuna, 1,400, white marlin, 2,600; blije marlin,'82; swordfish, 86;
dolphin, 350; wahoo, 130; mako shark, 110.
THESE CATCH estimates indicate that tl.e Hudson and Toms Canyons off New Jersey provide the best offshore tuna fishing on the entire Atlantic coast. White marlin were also caught in good numbers, especially in the Wilmington and' Baltimore Canyons. A hypothetical ’’average’’ trip to the canyons last summer, produced 3.3 yellowfin, 2.6 albacore, 0.2 bigeye and 0.5 white marlin. Giant blue marlin and swordfish, a once-in-a-lifctime catch, were taken on only about
one out of evfery 100 trips.
Canyon fishing demands the use of large, wellequipped vessels, with an average cost of $90,000. The total value of New Jefsey’s canyon fleet is about $73 million. Total expenditures by canyon anglers during 1981 amounted to nearly $12 million for boats; boat
maintenance, tackle and fuel.
