, THREE SIMPLE MINIGREENHOUSES!

One of the least expensive ways to stretch your garden a growing season is by const rurting an easy-to-build cold frame from recycled materials. It doesn't have to be fancy Jnit the hothouse shouWbe"tightly assembled to reduce heat loss . . its glass, top *hfpd slant to the south /. \ and its frame should be sheltered (against the'wall of

a housq^r outbuilding) on.it* nor^h side;

You <Wh't even have to have a, "right'' size for your homemade mini-greenhouse Look around the nearest dump o^ salvage yard until you find some glossed window sashes that measure approximateiy'3 X 6 feef.. Decide how many of the windows you want ^o use tori top of your cold frame, and construct a "box' on Which<to mount them, A simple rectangle of rough planks ( l-1/2 or 2 inches thick) will do tlW job just fine. Make the frame 24 inches tall at the back and about 16 inches high acres^the front. Set -the structure about 4 inches into the ground, drive stakes solidly into the earth inside at all four cofners. and nail the planks to the posts for greater strength.

Then spread a couple Of incK

nail the planks I nches ofgravel lowsWfop so tl

avel inside the cold frame (U) insure good drain-

age) and hinge the old windows'brrfop so they can be swung up and securely propped open whenever you want to reach inside the unit or ventilate the interior of the box. Yoilr crop house should warm up enough to allow you to start flats ofplants four to six weeks earlier than normal in the spring. It will also furnish you with fresh salad greets far into the fall and winter .. *ahd the frame can even serve an a storage area for root crops during exceptionally cbld weather. ( . On the other,'hand, should you decide to plant directly in the garden this spring, make some |>ortable greenhouses to help the little sprouts come along. I>arge containers. such as peanbt butter jars and translucent plastic milk jugs. Can be recycled to

become justperfect for baby plarwprotectors.

The peanut butter containers, of course, are the easiest to use: JusC take off their lids, wash the glass vessels.-and turn them’upside down over whatever sprouts in your vegetable patch need'protection.'However, translucent plastic milk jugs work ; ven better as garden plant protectors, since it's possible to regulate their internal temperatures*by simply removing and replacing the lids. Merely cut the bottoms right out of the containers and set the jugs upright over your early transplants and seeds. ** You cph make a simple indoor cold frame very easily, too. Just line a cardboard box

with plastic, bend two large half-loops from coat hanger wires, and set up one of these arched suppMts in each end of the box. After placing J t soil ai^ieeds in the container."put the whole arrangement into a largy. clear plastic garbage bag thht's tied with a^twister. Presto! An instant closed system that keeps the seedlings vary moist and relatively warm when placed in 'front of a window . yet can be opened'easily when you want to inspect, water, or aerate the

plants.
