Clean off the eggs with cotton and cut the (liwseckHh into pieces large enough for each to be wi^PP*^ about a Single Easter treat, twisted, and tied with a string • . • I jiv one squire of the material flat out on a tabfe and arrange the leaves and/or flow ••rs on the cloth keeping in mind how the decorations will be positioned when the wrapper is folded about the egg . • Now. Uftng’ very careful hot to wrinkle the foliage, pull the cheesecloth tightly together at the top twist the corners a little bit and then tiothe materal securely in place with string tThe idea is to have the greenery held so tightly against the eggs that the dye solution won t touch the protected portion of the shell I Next, put the little packets in the dye bath (be sure the liquid covers them) and "bring the water to a boil for lOYo 20 minutes rooking and dyeing the eggs in one step lOf course, you can boil you* eggs first knd then just dip them into the dye. The longer you submerge them irwlhe coloring, the deeper the hues will he.) When you remove the'Easter syrphols from the wateh cut the strings so you can reuse'vour cheesecloth and imprints for other eggs Finally. by Michele D. Madonna • Traditions of egg decofating have enriched the myths and legends of many cultures, and have delighted people of all ages around Eastertime for centuries. Popular believes, imagination and craftsmanship ;hqve turned egg decorating into a highly developed and diversified folk art. The egg itself possesses the secret of life; it symbolizes a "rebirth” and is often associated with Easter, spring, dawn and creation. All involve a beginning, and in'one form or a'nother, almost everyliving thing comes from or - can be tracked hack to an c^gg of some sort. MANY. YEARS before the birth of Christ, the Persians and Egyptians were coloring eggs. And-while the Jews do not celebrate EaSter, they too colored eggs at approximately the same time of the year, dur- v ing their Passover season In some parts of the world. Jews stijl use colored' eggs .for Passover and mother religious celebrations. Because of the coincidental nearn<?ss of-Passover and Easter, Christians may have gotten the idea for colored eggs from the Jews apd incorporated it into their Easter celebration Rose Society Being Formed DENNISVILLE - Memberships are being accepted in a new Rose Society to cover Cape May, Atlantic and Cumberland Counties. The next meeting will be 1:30 p.m. April 13. featuring a demonstration of how to prune roses. The location can be learned by calling Gdorge Wuesl at 399-6990. In many European < tries, it was the custom^ Easter day to have a ‘

of the "Easier Bunny.’*

BECAUSE RABBITS multiply quickly and ar^'a symbol of fertility, they became associated with the celebration; of lEaster. According tb ligend, the Pagan goddess of. spring, Eostre, turned a bird into a rabbit This may explain why, in some areas t the Easter Bunny delivers

parents and children color them during Easter week, leaving the eggs for the, Easter Bunny to hide on Easter Eve: If an egg is Vparticularly beautiful, it . may be kept to treasure as a work of art 6r given as a special gift to a friend. THE VARIOUS methods of decorating eggs have also become tradition. Today, some people still color their eggs by boiling them in natural materials such as onion skins («ee Dolrrg tMore...Wifh Lvaat column j or flowers, but the most common method of applying color is to use commercial dyes made especially for that purpose.
