I’m btginning.my column on Thursday night and trying to look forward to the-weekend because I'm planning to spend Easter weekend in Danville, Pa. with my son Dr. Rill and his family. It's doubly tough because the weather has set new records on coldness, and the tides have all been blowouts all week — so it's hard to foresee just what.the weekend will bring. «, ’’Last weekend the boats that got out found mackerel and marked plenty of fish, but this weekend remains a question mark.. I’m the eternal optimist when it comes to fishing, and I think that if this weather moderates, it could be a good weekend of mackerel catches — but that's very

optimistic. ,

I KNOW ALSO that they took the first .weakilsh in nets in the Bay, and it’s

very possible Ikat mmem? wlll „ . could get ooeo' the jetUMV^tcing poondeBe wfll go Ag>,n this is only a remote . d(mn 3I pp, however,

stripers spawn in Chesapeake Bay, and . migrate,tp all of our areas; and that .we would do. well to follow what the people are doing-in Maryland. The, proposal of a 15 inch limit, in the Bay, and a 24 inch _ limit in the ocean may seem harsh, but studies indicate that poundage will go up .47 per cent (he first l year, and : the increase in females will't* 10 pee cent..

possibility, and will pro^ ba'jfy take 'place a week from now instead 6f this weekend. The weather forecast doesn’t $ound too good, blit they’ve rbeen wrong all througly “esc first three months, and Tm betting on a nice' weekend.

. I visited Dou^xlia down at the County airport and he was telling jne that he attended the striped bass hearing this last Monday, and about 75 sport fishermen showed up. T1JE UPSHOT OF the meeting was that most

btit this*seems to b& necessiary if we are to keep enough striped bass around to consider them" a game fish. It*' was also a unanimous opinion of this group that, it is a problem ' that we should all address; and thai there should be a . moratbrium on the sale of striped'bass. and that netting should be blocked off in spawning areas. 'This, too, makes sense. I’d like t(j>go into this sometime.in the future in detail, but jhat was the gist of the meeting; and I'm sure there will be a lot more discussions before it is all settled. Sal Sprace of the Five Star called this morning, and said he had a very successful, trip in Alaska, and had bagged a 9 ft. polar bear, along with his 500 lb.-plus blue marlin. Sal has really gotten some big specimens in the last nine months. His boat has been rebuilt'with a 4 ft. addition, and it won't be long before he and Iizle will be out ’ looking for big billfish .

again.

We didn’4 get off on Thursday, as I originally figured, because of "heavy snow, which sort of makes my optimistic forecast seem a little premature, but there’s still a chance that Friday will clear up on (he weather scene, and Die weekend won’t be a total loss. I was talkipg to Cpt. Jim Solley of the Fiesta, and he said Friday mom- . ing was really a washout, but they're still hoping for a good weekend. It's really tough on the party boat skippers at this time of the year, because it’s hard to remember a year when the weather conditions were this rough. I ALSO WANT to announce that the fnn Shark Wishing Club will hold their first organizational meeting. 7 p.m. Saturday, April 17 at the Villas Inn on Bayshore Road and Miami Ave. Cpt. Jiih Solley was telling me they plana short meeting to decide on whether they are going to have jackets again this ypar or go with caps and shirts. I'm hoping Friday dawns bright and clear, and my optimistic forecast will come alive.
