'81 Catch Down Weakies Due Back In Bay TRENTON - It's time for weakfish to make their annual appearance in Delaware Bay — and, if the water warms up, at the end of fishermen’s lines. That’s the world from the N.J. Bureau of Marine Fisheries, which says fishing for the tendermouthed "weakies" should hit its peak in May. The peak season runs from April to June. A JOINT survey by the state Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife and the Delaware Division of Wildlife last spring estimated that fishermen caught 156,000 weakfish in the bay. Anglers also brought in 143.000 bluefish and 40,000 fluke for a total catch of 339.000 fish. The survey showed there was a 27 per cent decline from 1980 to 1981 in the number of weakfish landed, but nearly a 70 per cent increase in the number of blues caught. The fluke catch remained about the same. During the three-month season, 122,000 anglers from New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New York, Virginia and Maryland fished Delaware Bay. The survey estimated that they spent $4.3 million on fishing equipment, bait, charter fees, food and lodging. Rio Grande Builds V’ball Superiority CAPE MAY - Needlers II swept consecutive matches last week in Coed Volleyball League play over Cape May Yacht Sales 15-7, 15-4, 15-11 and Red Garter 15-12, 15-3, 15-0. Cape Island Sailing Cruise benefited from the crisp serving and setting of John Wilsey and Irene Digilio in a (15-5,15-6,15-3) victory over Cape May Yacht Sales. Rio Grande Building Materials clipped the Red Garter 15-2, 15-10, 16-14 behind the volleying of Toots Fitzpatrick and Frank Vogel. OFF THE WALL fcang split a pair of "all or nothing" matches last week. They started 4 out with a 15-5, 16-14, 15-4 sweep of Cape May Yacht Sales before losing to Guys and Dolls 15-5, 15-10, 15-11. Marlene Mediuch and Tom Roth paced off The Wall Gang while Guys and Dolls was led in their winning effort by Rick Ferrante and Margaret Hand. Rio Grande Building Materials broke the Needlers II three times 15-0, 15-15, 15-13 as Donna Troiano, Fran Vogel, and Ernie Troiano served Rio to victory. Scott Brown and Sue Hellings were sharp for the Needlers.
