Landfill Site Still Elusive

SWAINTON — A see saw battle continues between the Pinelands Commission and the Cape May County MUA over the site for the proposed new county land-

fill.

The MUA last summer chose a site known as No. 17 on the Woodbine-Upper Township border. The Pinelands Commission staff thus far has failed to endorse that site and has asked the MUA to provide additional information on Site No. 11 in Middle Township, 1,000 feet from Route 9 near Brooks Ave. A FIELD SITE survey was conducted by Pinelands and MUA staff personnel two weeks ago. MUA officials ruled out the site because it was close to a developed area. Fiftyfour homes are there at the present with the prospect of 40 more to be built. According to Ted O’Neill, MUA Solid . Waste Manager, the site was also rejected because a soil

survey indicated the depth to groundwater was insufficient. The Cohansey Acquirer, a main supply of drinking water for the area, is directly under the site. O'Neill said, making it a "recharge area.” ••ONE OF THE Pinelands Commission's problems," O'Neill stated, "is the fact that this is the first proposed new landfill within the Pinelands. We are both breaking new ground." The Middle Township site is outside the Pinelands boundary. A list of questions requested by the Pinelands Commission is to be answered by the MUA in two weeks. O’NEILL SAYS he believes the two agencies are not assigning the same weight to the same criteria, such as proximity to developed areas, and depth to groundwater. "Slow but steady, is the way I would describe our progress to date,” O’Neill said. “Unfortunately, the clock is ticking and we need to resolve the site issue. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has directed that all other landfills in the county must close by the spring of 1983. The pressure is on.”
