NICK LOWE'S first solo effort, Mrfe The Knife (Columbia (". since the demise of Kockpile is full of wellcrafted pop songs Nick's voice is consistently pleasing and his hacking musi cians. while lacking the driving guitar of Dave Kdmunds. are always supportive . Nick .Lowe’s music has a strong sense of humor, infectious melodies, and a steady, dependable beat. Nick Lower should have a long a/id fruitful solo career » FANS OF Heart and Huarlerflash should check out Canada's Lydia Taylor Band. Their American debut (Passport) has strong material, getting the best/out ofS^Lydia Taylor's powerful voice Fortunately fop her. the musiciansVon’l/hverpower her with senseless guitar riffs. This is one mainstream rock band that knows the meaning of moderation. If given a few breaks. The Lydia Taylor Band could emerge as a popular group on the stadium circuit HAIRCUT ONE Hundred might be the hottest group in England. They've just gotten their third con-
secutive top-ten single and everyone is raving about them. Their first album. Pelican West (Arista) has been released here and it's easy to see why everyone is .so excited Haircut One Hundred nicely blend British pop. I^atin rhythms, and wild horn arrangements to" create a unique, likeable brand of rock. With an American tour about to start and such a strong first effort. Haircut One Hundred could. 1 quite easily, repeat their success on our shores. Worth a listen PAUL COLLINS*?. Beat are back with their second album. The Kids Are The Same (Columbia), and there’s no reason why this group can’t make it big. Theif music is melodically influenced by mid-60s bands such as The Beatles and Byrds, yet the group plays with the crushing power of AC/DC or Motorhead. Paul Collins' voice is appealing and as a songwriter he knows how to trim excess and keep things interesting. Paul Collins’ Beat should be getting heavy airplay on FM-rock radio.

A Review (Frorii Page 23) to coordinate the setting changeovers of George’s two worlds. There are separate sets of spotlights and dimming devices that switch tl\e action as the change takes place. The lighting is most effective and interesting to the audience. An atmosphere of summer theatre, with audience grouped three-sided on bleachers about the floor where the production is staged, allows for informality and intimacy. So much so, it was noted last Sunday night, two members of the audience slept soundly throughout the first act as George’s humdrum existence unraveled. THE COMMUNITY THEATRE production is under the direction of Peter Vernon. Michael Murphy designed the clever set. Helen Boone is the artistic designer; lighting was designed by Steve Megonigal; and Marisa M. Warner serves as stage manager. The production continues tomorrow, Friday and Saturday nights, at 8 o’clock, in the Franklin Street Community Center next to the firehouse in Cape May. Libby Demp Forrest of Cape May is a freelance writer.
