Bomb Threat ‘Directed’ At School Disciplinarian
by Bob SfailM ERMA — The false bomb scare here last Tuesday that ended the day early for Lower Cape May Regional High School students was “directed” at assistant principal Thomas Turner. According to prinicipal Alan Beattie, an investigation by school officials into the April 20 incident has provided some leads to who may have been behind the hoax. Turner was hired last fall as the school’s chief discipline. The principal did not elaborate, but said that the “threat was directed at' him (Turner).” He added that an immediate search of the building by Lower Township police, fire and rescue personnel revealed no explosive devices and
that rumors that some type of chemical explosive was discovered under the assistant prinicipal’s desk are false. There were unconfirmed reports that authorities also carefully searched Turner’s car. Lower Township police Lt. ChaHes Thornton told the newspaper last week that police were called to the school about 2 p.m. April 2o in response to a telephoned bomb threat. The school was immediately evacuated, and a thorough jsearch conducted. No bomb was found and the incident was officially classified as a false bomb threat. ing bussed home before being permitted to re-enter the building. Mr. Beattie was not at the high school at the time of the incident, and the evacuation of the building was handled by Mr. Turner. At last Thursday's school
board meeting, board member Freeman Douglass commented the assistant principal for the way he handled the situation. “I HAPPENED TO be here when the incident took place,” Mr. Douglass said. "Mr. Turner handled it
very nicely. He couldn’t have handled it better." “The worse thing about the incident is that it ha^ pened right at the end of the school day,” Mr. Beattie indicated. “The kids couldn’t get back in the school to get their things. Girls had to leave their
pocketbooks and some student^ had to go'home in their gym clothes,” he said. The principal added that while everything had to be left out until the next day, there were no reports of anything stolen from he building.
