THE LATE Janli Joplin was one of the most powerful singers to emerge from the exciting 60s. Her raspy vocie was full of passion, and unlike many who tried, she could honestly belt out the blues. Farewell Song (Columbia) is a nice collection of leftover tracks and live material. At times, the sftund might be a little ragged, but throughout it all, Janis Joplin makes each track worth hearing. She was a true talent, who had a lot more to offer. Enjoy. ALONG WITH The Byrds, San Francisco’s Beau Brummels were able to break the stronghold the English groups had on the charts in the mid-60s. were a smooth rock and roll band with strong roots in folk and country. Their lead vocalisL Sal Valentino. was fortunate enough to have a distinotive style to set him apart from the competition. Thjb best part was that The Beau Brummels could write solid material — such as Laugh Laugh and Just A Little. Introducing still sounds good. SPANDAU BALLET'S second album, Didmond (Chrysalis) is another monotonous, . overproduced mess. True, the steady beat is fine for dancing, but the vocals and playing lack feeling Perfect fodder for the dancefloor but at home, Spandau Ballet are just plain boring. FAY RAY is a new hard rock band from England and their debut, Contact You (Elektra) is rather promising. The group concentrates on a hard driving, guitar dominated sound, but the vocals of Sheila Macartney add depth to even their weakest

songs.

over a mass audience. Give them another album or two and they probably will. THE KINGSMEN will always be remembered for their hit version of the rock classic Louie Louie, but as their recently re-issued Greatest Hits (First American. 73 Marion St., Seattle, WA. 98104) shows

this group had plenty of wild, R&B flavored rockers to excite dancers in the early sixties. Maybe this will sound too dated or primitive for fans of Journey or Styx, bul those of us who grew up in this era will enjoy every minute of it. The Kingsmen weren't the most important band to come out of the 60s, but they were one of the reasons it was such a fun period. Besides, Louie Louie alone is worth the price of admission;
