Assistance Administration (LEAA) has helped a large number of state and local agencies to implement 911 service. ••1 BELIEVE the implementation of 911 would give Middle Township residents a distinct advantage in fighting crime and reaching the authorities in emergency sttmrttons,” Leusner saicy \ If 911 is imbiemented, the possibility\exists^ that monies may ^-available from the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration. Leusner, who recently met with Congressman William J. Hughes, said the Congressman pledged vMiatever assistance is necessary to determine if funds are available for this project. Currently in use in Atlantic City and Brigantine, 911 enables residents to reach police, fire, and ambulance services with the threedigit number. Also, a person who witnesses a crime on the street or in a public place may reach the police by dialing 911 from any public or pay telephone without the use of coins. A Local Job? Bank Robbed at Gunpoint
VILLAS — Two men made off with more than $8,200 from the local branch of Marine National Bank following a daring mid-day robbery at gunpoint last Wednesday. Earlier this week authorities were still looking for the culprints, whom at least one knowledgeable source believes may be local. One of the robbers wore a stocking over his face. Lower Township Det. Frank Majane said Monday that while numerous individuals were questioned, no suspects had been charged. Rumor that descriptions given by bank employees differed greatly from pictures taken by bank Cameras during the hold-up were unfounded. ACCORDING TO police, the two men — at least one brandishing a single-barrel shotgun - entered the Bays bore Rd. bank around 2:30 p.m. and demanded money from a teller. They fled after receiving the cash, leaving the shotgun behind on a desk. No shots were fired and there were no customers in the bank at the time. ‘‘We’re pursuing the investigation based Finishes Basic N. CAPE MAY - Pvt. William B. primarily on the description given by bank employees," Det. Majane said, declining to comment whether he expected anyone soon to be charged. POLICE CHIEF Robert Denny told the newspaper that in most cases, descriptions given by bank employees coincided with the robbers as shown on bank cameras. Another source, who is also close to the investigation, acknowledged that while some who witnessed the crime were ‘‘a little mixed up" because of the excitement, a "pretty good” description was obtained from others in the bank.
The same source also told the newspaper Monday that there is a "strong indication" the culprits are from the area. THE SUSPECT who wore the stocking over his face was described as about 5-8, wearing dark blue pants, green army fatigue jacket, dirty undershirt, white sneakers and a hat. The other man, also believed to be in his late 20s and the same height, wore a white cotton jacket. Indications are there may be a break in the case once authorities conclude follow-ups on leads in the continuing investigation.
