U.S. Senate Only One Primary Contest Countywide
While overall there are few contested primaries on the June 8 ballot next month, county voters in both the GOP and Democratic parties will have plenty of candidates from which to select a U.S. Senate nominee. Thirteen candidates — three Republicans and ten Democrats -t are seeking the nomination to run for the seat recently vacated by Abscam victim Sen. Harrison Williams. The winners of their respective party's nomination will square off against each other in the November general election. ON THE GOP ballot will be Rep. Millicent Fenwick (recently endorsed by Cape May County GOP leaders), Jeffrey Bell (Senate nominee in 1978), and Robert Morris (attorney from Mantoloking). Running for the
Democrat nomination are Barbara Boggs Sigmund of Princeton (Mercer County Freeholder Director and daughter of Rep. Lindy Boggs, D-La.), Donald Cresitello (former mayor qf Morristown), Richard McAIeer of Ocean Grove, Joseph A. LeFante of Bayonne (former congressman and state commissioner of Community Affairs), Howard Rosen of Millbum, Angelo R. Bianchi of South Orange, Cyril Yannarelli of Paterson, Frank R. Lautenberg of Montclair (endorsed by Cape May County Democratic leader James lannone), Frank Forst of Jamesburg, and Andrew Maguire of Ridgewood. A RECENT article in this newspaper stating there are no primary contests • this year on the countywide ballot excluded the Senate race. All other seats up for
grabs are unopposed. The county-wide Democratic ballot also includes Rep. William Hughes who is seeking his fifth term in Congress. His GOP challenger is John Mahoney, an educator from Buena Vista Township. Clerk candidates are Republican incumbent Angela F. Pulvinoand Middle Township Democrat Edward J. Rosenberg. FOR COUNTY freeholder is GOP incumbent Jack Bittner. Elected last week as Ocean City mayor, Mr. Bittner is expected not to run in the November general election. On the Democratic ticket for freeholder is County Democratic leader James R. lannone,. The only candidate for the office of surrogate is Republican incumbent W. Robert Hentges.
Transfer Station Huddle
SWAINTON - Municipal mayors' and private solid waste haulers iri southern Cape May County have bedn invited to meet at Wildwood City Hall Tomorrow, May 20, to discuss the County Municipa'I Utilities Authority’s plans for a transfer station, by George Marinakis, executive director. “We need the cooperation and consultation of the people affected by our recent decision to suspend further design activities on the solid waste transfer station as originally planned for a site on Route 47 in Middle Township,” Marinakis said in a letter sent to the officials. Last summer the county authority identified the Route 47 site, also the location of the Wildwood/Lower Regional wastewater treatment plant, as the site for the transfer station to reduce the cost of transporting solid waste to the new landfill. UPDATED COST estimates, based upon the preliminary engineering completed to date, have subsequently revealed, according to Marinakis, that to build one facility sized to
