This week, has been another one of great weather and large catches of big weakfish, drum, and big blues. Almost all of the partyboats and many private boats are fishing the Bay now. Some action

has been during the daytime, but the best catches were made at night during the week. On the weekend the situation’s sort of reversed. I made several stops this past week, and in almost every spot the story was the same. Lots of big blues, good catches of big weakfish. and above average drum catches at
night. )
DOWN AT THE Miss Chris Fishing Cchtcr Mrs. Frank Speigel showed me a picture of an 84 lb. drum taken On Saturday night, and said Cpt. Frank Speigel on the Miss Chris II had a nice catch of big blues and weaks all during the week. At Bayview Marina, Bob Olivio showed me a Cape May County contest entry card where he had weighed in an 85 lb. drum Saturday night, and told me one of his parties came in with 16 big weakfish, and 62 medium to large size blues. Bob said there were blues at Bug Light, and weaks and blues at the horseshoe on the

lower end of the punk grounds At Rodia's in Rio Grande Joe Rodia said he has weighed in 36 drum so far this year, which just about tops his total weigh-in in 1981. Joe now has a tie in his drum contest between Bill Burnett of Philadelphia, and Bill Bucsek, who runs the Busy Bpp. They both have a 69 lb. black drum for the top spot. Jim Magill, of Villas, has eight drum, so far this season, and on Thursday night Paul Clark, Joe Jordan, George Snyder, and Fez Traykul of Villas came in with five drum with the biggest one going 66 lbs. The biggest weakfish in Joe's contest is 14 lbs 9 ozs., and was caught by Ed Clark. Jim Wallace, of Jim’s Bait & Tackle in The Landing said he's had a terrific weigh-in of big weakfish and drum and gave me a picture of I^rry McGraw, of North Cape May with an 80 lb. drum taken on the Tiger Shark with Frank Vertello. Ed Jones, who runs the Spare Time out of McNeills, said he had two different parties out who caught a lot of big weakfish Saturday and Sunday. Down at the Fish Hook in the Villas. "Rusty" Chew had so many weakfish to clean that 1 had to leave the store, because the sight of all those tide runners just made me want to go fishing.
John Manganarao and I couldn’t stand it any longerFriday, so we launched John’s 17 ft. Mako from Bayview Marina, and ran out to Bug Light. We saw a lot of fish swirls, and John hooked and landed two nice blues, but nothing else was cooperating. and everybody on the CB was telling the same story. WHAT DOES all this mean? Well, for one thing there's a lot of fish in the Bay. and the fishing is very good, but in spite of all these catches there’s no guarantee that you’re going to catch a big wcakie, or a drum, or a big blue. You just have to get out there fishing, and get in the right place at the right time, and you've got a chance. I think this is the best season we’ve had in a
long while.
To Dave Roseman, who called home this week: Yes, Dave, there are a lot of drum being caught, but we still miss you finding them, and the big weakfish are here in the punk grounds and Brandywine, but they're biting at certain times of the tide. NOW FOR A last minute report; Rill Nicholson, who runs the Final A-Lee out of Rosemans. got five drum on Friday night, and Randy Laudeman and Donald, Roseman came in with,35 boxes of big blues and weakfish. On Saturday it seemed like every boat in Cape May was fishing
Brandywine Light, and the weakfish catch was ter rific. I went out with Cpt. Jim Delaney on the Bor bara along with Jim Donahue and Charles Hand of Nesco, N.J. Jim Donahue topped us all .with a 12 lb, weakfish. and Charles Hand landed a 10 pounder We only had fourbig weakfish. but they sure looked good in that fishbox The party boats had a field day. and a lot of fish were taken ' Cpt. Jay Beecroft on the Bonifo had 30 big weakfish for his par ty It's impossible to name all the catches with the space I have, but it was a
great day.
IF YOU WERE one of the people who didn't get a big weakfish. don't feel bad In the midst of all these catches all I could hook was a big gray shark. But I’ll be back, as soon as I can go again trying to catch one of those tiderunners or‘ a drum. It's time to go fishing on the Jersey Cape Drum are up the Bay; and
weakfish and blues are all
over’the place.
Or\e last item There is a new marina on Rio Grande Blvd, Cpt. Bob McCarron and John l.ipski are renting slips for their place where the''Cherokee used to dork just -short of the George Redding bridge going into Wildwood It is called the Rio Grande Fishing Center and they are chartering the G Lee, a 37 ft post out of
this
location.
80 LB. DRUM is flanked by Laity McGraw of North Cape May who caught it aboard Frank Vertella’s Tiger Shark.
