Some of the fellows that did stay became the main body of the conversation, as I ran into Ralph Schellinger

In Rio Grande Sr. was calling around, fc'nd he found out that Rill Tomlin had 15 drum fishing with Jim Watson. that they had gotten around four in the morning; Dougle Bright was out there too, and he had 12 drum with a 77-1/2 lb. topper. and Joe Rodla Jr. took a night off and came in with seven drum that went up to 75 lbs , and 15 weakfish. There was a fellow who owns a boat named the Sea Queen who had 18 drum on Sunday night, and 22 on
Monday
You can see by numbers that the (drum season is really in. THE STANDINGS in Joe Rodia's contest are follows: Jeff Severance is in the number one spot with a 90 lb. 6 oz. drum. Doug Bright is next with a 77 lb. 6 oz.. Bill Burnett 3rd with a 74 lb. 6 oz., fourth is Jack Johnson with a 74 pounder;, and John Bartleson is fifth with a 71 pounder (he had II drum when he caught this fifth-place fish). Capt \W Thompson couldn't enter his big fellow.-because he’s night captain on the Big Jim .11 and that makes him ineligible in Joe'-s contest. Later on in the week Capt. Hi went out with me on the Janie T. VII and caught a 50 pounder which I gaffed I've got so many reports on drum and weakfish that I could fill the column with catches. THE EARLY hotspot is inshore of the Horseshoe in the middle of the Bay, and southwest of Bug Light, but on Friday night those drum made a move, and a lot of fish were taken northeast of Brandwyine. Jim Delaney, Joe Halbruner. and I were fishing at the mid-bay location with not much doing, and my old friend Tom Jorgenson of Wildwood called and guided us to the
■y Boyd Tylfj
Services new location, because he
had two fish there. We anchored between Cpt. Joe Drosea. who is now captaining the Lobster House - (Joey had two drum) and about 1 a m. Joe Halbruner hooked and I gaffed a 80 pounder for him (I’ve been doing a good Job gaffing this year, so I should be due
to catch one.)
YOU MAKE a lot of runs in drum season before you find their main feeding spots. On Sunday, Jack Osborne. Cpt. Don Murphy. George Spalding, and I made a trip to the Pin Top, but we were a little early for drum. I did gaff a 12 lb. eakfish for "little Gish," nd got a chance to hear he slory of Cpt. Don and Jack's trip to the
Chesapeake. ^
They caught 40 drum there, and had a wonderful time. On Wednesday Jack took mom Gladys out, and she caught *a big bluefish, 'artid Jack got his first this, year on the Red Beard, a 70
lb. humpback.
I wish I had room for all the weakfish catches, but

they're tremendous. Randy Laudeman. and Donald Roseman came in with 58 boxes of big weaks Wednesday, and had water pouring over the gunwales of Randy's Sea Ox. Cpt. Frank Cassedy on the Lady Grace has been coming in every day with loaded fish boxes, and happy parties, and the big party boats have been unloading tags and bags of big wcakieS every day. Cpt. Charlie Selby sent out a news letter listing catches on the Rainbow for every day last week, and his parties were winning pools on these trips with 9 and 10 lb.
weakfish.
CAPTAIN CHARLIE figures the weakfishing will improve until the end of the month, when the big weakies will move from the Bay to the'Ocean; and form big schools — which will give more big catches of those tiderunncrs, Capt. Joe McNamee is running
night drum parties on the Rainbow, and he’s had several good catches on those trips too. Cpt. Bill tlenfey on the Sea Raider reported that they’d had mixed catches of big weaks and blues all weekend with the weakies becoming more plentiful at the end of the week. One of his pool winners was Charles Shroeder of Wildwood with a 10 lb. weakfish, and another was John Young Jr. of Wildwood boated a 65 lb. drum, and on that same night Jakchac Kielponglert, of Tuckahoe, had a 11 lb. 4 oz. tiderunner. I was talking with Cpt. Jay Stlenmetz, who runs a - charter out of the Miss Chris Fishing Center, and he came up with a good suggestion: Why n#t take some ice in a cooler along with you, so that the fish you catch will be fresh? A lot of good fish are ruined because they’re not iced down after you catch them.

THERE’S A NEW restaurant at South Jersey Marina called the Dochside Galley, and they’re going to open at 4 in the morning until 8 in the evening — and after the season starts they'll be open around the clock. Cpt. Dick Weber has put out his brochures on his tournaments—the first one of their annual Shark Tournament June. 11,12 & 13 with a $5,000 prize. I'll have more on the rest next week. EVERY SEASON there’s an unusual story. I heard one Saturday night that could have been tragic, but it turned out O.K. We were eating at the Lobster House Diner when four fellows came in looking very bedraggled. Three of them sat down to order, and one said he'd lost his appetite. The leader of the group kept saying “I'm going to quit fishing, and take up bird watching." My sister in-law Rea was talking to the 4th one who wasn't hungry. She said, "Boyd, you ought to hear this, these fellows have been broke down for 13 hours in the Bay, and no one would help them." I said to the would-be Bird Watcher, "Did you call on the radio?" He replied, "I don’t have a radio on my boat."
ED CLARK of Villas has a lot to smile about; like this 65 lbs. drum — and the 14 lbs. 9 oz. weakfish he caught earlier, which leads, so far in Joe Rodia’s contest. "Well, f'^apld, “where were you?" He said, ’Tm pot quite sure." So I asked, "what compass course did you go out on? His answer was amazing: "I don’t have a compass either," but I’ve been doing this night fishing for three years, and I was really scared. I just couldn’t help It! "I said, Well if you did all that without a compass and a radio, and you’re here with your three companions safe and sound, I think I'd take up bird watching too, because you won’t get a second chance." IT’S MY opinion that anyone with a boat should take a driver's test just the same as we do with an automobile. That Bay and the Ocean are awfully big bodies of water, and the inexperienced usually wind up in trouble. That’s a hard way to end n column, but now that the fishing is good, why not spend a little money, and go with an experienced captain. The life you save may be your own! LAST MINUTp news story: The CUancola brothers got tired of waiting around for someone, to take them fisHink, so they got a boat, and rook off for the drumbeds. Sear and Greg Giancola each caught one — they’re very first. Sean got a 87 pounder, and Greg got a 62 pounder, while Brian who did the gaffing is still after one. There’s a lot of fish scales on the floor of the Texas Ave. Food Market. Jim Wallace gave me a picture of this trip, and I hope it gets in the paper. THIS WEEK will be Memorial Day. Fly your flag, and thank god that you live in America where you can go fishing any time you want to!
