emerge from their burrows and begin to sort clawfuls of mud fpr bits of detritus. Mud snails glide over the flats, scraping algae and detritus Grass shrimp swim from the ehanno! depths to forage among the marsh grasses at high tide. Killifishes also become active again in the tidal creeks Sand shrimp, rock crabs, and the cold-water fishes migrate back to the cooler ocean waters where temperature changes occur more gradually.

' Jr ‘ TS-r--'* 'y rr ■ sihmide SPlifER CRABS and blue crabs reveal themselves as water temperatures Hse. Male blue crabs, which have spent the winter in the muds of shallow creeks, move downstream to join females which have hibernated in or closer to, ocean sediments. Large schools of baitfishes enter the embayment including silversides, anchovies, nedhaden, and herrings. Their predators, weakfish, summer flounder (fluke) and striped bass, soon follow. In spring, movement into and out of the marshes and bays results in an increase in the variety of plants and animals present. Look for some of these returnees when you are next outdoors.
