Sea Isle City y/as formally established as aVmunicipality on May 1, 1982. Landis, who had successfully founded k and developed the city of Vineland, was touring Italy in the late 1870’s and while visiting Venice he became enamored with the city’s many canals. He decided then that he would attempt to build a counterpart in New Jersey. Back home, Landis began scouting the South Jersey coastline and came across what he called a “delightful barrier island” in Cape May county. He bought the land, once used for grazing sheep and cattle, in 1880 and proceeded to develop his dream city.

His canals were dug and still are an important part of the city’s recreational life and commercial fishing ventures. Many of his hotels were rebuilt over the years. Bridges, railroads, highways, (he water company, streets and homes all became a reality through Landis’vision. ' Today, a century after Sea Isle City was born, the old hotels are gone, the railroads are but a memory, but Landis’ dream is now a booming city. Land prices have increased 50 to 100 times and people throng to Sea Isle City, halfway between Atlantic City and Wildwood, for vacation and year round living. This summer's celebration is
the culmination of planning thal began last year on recommendation for Mayor Dominic C. Kaffa who named a Sqa Isle City Centennial Committee The mayor is highly enthusiastic aboul the summer of ’82.
