Sea Isle City y/as formally established as aVmunicipality on May 1, 1982. Landis, who had successfully founded k and developed the city of Vineland, was touring Italy in the late 1870’s and while visiting Venice he became enamored with the city’s many canals. He decided then that he would attempt to build a counterpart in New Jersey. Back home, Landis began scouting the South Jersey coastline and came across what he called a “delightful barrier island” in Cape May county. He bought the land, once used for grazing sheep and cattle, in 1880 and proceeded to develop his dream city.
