Rights To Beach At Issue

AVALON For years the fishermen and the surfers have been at odds over beach rights for the 30th Street strand here .The fishermen contend * surfers are endangered by hooks and sinkers cast from the fishing pier The surfers claim that 30th Street beach has the best waves in the borough and has been mandated as a surfing area for the last fourteen years Capt. Murray Wolf of the Avalon Beach Patrol, and Police Chief Joseph Foley both came out in favor of keeping the designated surfing area at 30th Street. Their reasoning was the beach access paths for emergency vehicles could most readily be utilized from the existing location. The Avalon Fishing Club, represented by vicepresident Frank Holbert,

stated their opposition to the location of the surfing beach. , BOROUGH COUNCIL, at the May 20 bi-weekly work session, discussed a resolution to satisfy.both groups. A string of flags was proposed to be placed 30 yards north of the fishing pier that will divide the legal surfing-fishing areas North of the flags, surfers will be permitted to surf; south of the flags, fishermen will be allowed to cast their lines IN OTHER matters, a retaining wall to slow storm tides and surf is being considered between 21st and 32nd streets "For the safety and welfare of the borough residents, I believe a retaining wall is a good idea to protect these residents close to the shoreline," said borough administrator Andrew

Bednarek A restroom is also being considered behind the 21st Street lifeguard station, "The existing facility of one bathroom is totally inadequate for the summer crowd," the administrator said All decisions regarding the beach will come up for ratification at the Town Meeting, May 27, in the Municipal Building on 32nd Street.

REOPENING of season at Helen L. Oilier Vacation Home for Blind Children in Avalon will be marked by a fund-raising party^ Saturday, June 12.
