WILDWOOD. NEW JERSEY
WILDWOOD - The High School at Baker and Pacific Aves. turns out artisans and cabinetmakers as well as scholars. And Herbert Frederick, in charge of industrial and vocational training at the school, has every right to be proud of his pupils. Some of their finished furniture was entered, in the Annual South Jersey Craftman’s Fair, in Deptford Mall last month, and was considered exceptional at the spectacular exhibition. Forty school districts from eight South Jersey counties competed, entering a total of 1,300 pieces to be judged. BILL CATERING, a senior from Wildwood Crest, took first place in his division for a magnificent mahogany grandfather’s clock. Bill hand-carved the ship at the base of the clock, did all lathe turnings, moldings, everything in fact except for the mechanical works which are German and ordered from Massachusetts. A mahogany roll-top desk created by Ronald Harwood of North Wildwood is still in contention for first place' with another entry. A Boston rocker won second in its division for Mark Novsak of West Wildwood. Made of rock maple, the same wood used for butchers' blocks which blunts tools almost im-

mediately, the chair was most difficult to make since everything about it is made of com^kiund angles. THERE IS ALSO an armoire not only crafted but completely designed by Ben Laurielle of Wildwood Crest which could only have been conceived by a true cabinetmaker. Awaiting completion is an inlaid chess board, of mahogany and pine, mounted on a pedestal base. This is the work of Matt Jaffe of Wildwood Crest, a first-year student and will be entered in a future competition. For those who enjoy .seeing finely crafted wood work, the furniture will be on display in the lobby of Union Bank on Pacific Ave. for a week, June 4 thru 11. —M'Ellen Rowland
