I'vf grM no many fiah Ukt lo tell that I hardly know where to start! That's the sign of a good spring fishing season, and it a due mostly to the good weather we've been having. and the host of fishermen who have been out there after fish I'm going to start off on Wark drum because that's still the headline fish, and I believe they'll be here for ;at least two more weeks I W ANT TO correct one statement I made last week i said there were 20 drum in back of Men*'a restaurant' J. Franklin Men* called me and told me there were actually" 40 there; so I stand corrected /I,knew there were a lot of . drum in that pile, and I

triod not to exaggerate This past week has seen some of the hottest drum fishing yet. and I’ve got another of thoae once-in-a-d rum-season tales Jack Osborne who has really been hot this week on the Rrd Beard is part of it. "Jack got five drum Monday night which "Little (lish" Spalding gaffed and netted Then he turned around on Tuesday and caught six more, which George also gaffed Jack took a break at this point, and Little Gish hooked a !V5 poundfr which Jack obligingly gaffed for him (we had begun to think George was going to spend the season gaffing drum 1 WELL ANYWAY, the first two drum he caught on

12-POUND weakle hoisted by Cpt. Delaney of the Barbara out of Roseman's, whrch he caught near Brandywine shoal. and we pulled into the fleet at the Pin Top, and anchored there on the first of the flood, and I hooked my •first drum for 19R2 (a 50 pounder) which Joe llalbruner gaffed; and then Joe hooked a 12 pound bluefish, which' I netted. Cpt. Rill Tozour was offshore of us, aod-he asked Jack on thq''radio, "How did Boyd get on the same spot ypudeft, and catch a fish?" Jack said. ‘‘I just marked an X in the water for him ", WHAT REALLY happened was that Jack gave me the I<oran C numbers that he was going to fish Tuesday morning and I just got on them, and it worked. It helps to have a friend who finds the fish — and then goes somewhere else, and lets you have a shot at them (This is really a true story) JOE MACGREGOR call ed to congratulate me, and said he had two fish at the location Jack had moved to, but we stuck it but

pounder The next night we headed up the Bay to the other set of numbers where Jack had gotten his catch, but the fire had died Out

JIM MAGILL was offshore and got two, and Cpt. Ray Vandegrift on the Ca nyon Lady had one in by Jack, and then moved offshore and caught another one. Capt. Ray had Tom Rice abroad from Destin, Fla., and Tom had caught a drum with him the night

before

We did get one trophy at * this location though, Joe Halbruner hooked a 14 pound weakfish, and I netted it for him; and that was worth the trip. On Thursday, the fog came in but Jack and George Spalding, and I headed out there again on the Red Bread, but the fog closed in pretty tight, so we fished till 7 o’clock and headed for the ham while we still had some daylight. ON THE WAY in we passed Cpt. Bob Muller on Upt. Bill Henfy’s Sea taider in the canal going tut drumming, but most 'everybody else stayed in because of the fog. The Sea Raider has been going good on drum. Cpt. Bill reported that one night "Bucky” Shaefer of Wildwood, got a 46 lb. 6 oz. one. Jo^ Rulovas got a 66 lb. 6 oz. trophy drum, and Barbara Bertroth of King of Prussia got a 37 1/2 lb. humpback. Cpt. Paul Thompson on the Porgy II had five drum for his party on Saturday night; and Cpt. Jay Beecroft on the Bonito got 11 drum during the week for a party from TRW of Cleveland NOW ON TO WEAKFISHING: During the week Cpt. Dan Guss on the Huntress out of South Jersey marina was telling me he had a Tuesday party,* and got 70 large weakfish. Big weakfish have been there all this last week, and Cpt. John Herron on the Slammer out of Rosemans returned Thursday >Vith a full box, and a satisfied party. Cpt. John said he had to go to Brown Shoal for those tide runners so they’re probably starting to move toward the Oceanfront. A lot of the big party boats are “lighting" those big weaks at night, and doing well too. Cpt. "HI" Thompson on the Big Jim II had a good cfltch Tuesday night this way. There's/till time to get a big weakfish in the Bay, but you better head for the lower end, and fish the

tides.

IF YOU GET up the Bay put a weakfish rod over too, because the netters are still getting nice catches inside of Deadmans Shoal. I know this sounds contradictory, but I don’t think anyone knows for sure just how

many big weakfish are in the Bay. One big school seems to be mbving dut, but there’s still a concentration up around Miah Maul that is moving down, and this could keep the run going. Cpt. Madden on the Adventurer It is going to start chumming blues and weaks in the mouth of the Bay this weekend leaving the dock at 7 p.m., and maybe this will throw some light on the subject. THERE ARE BIG blues in the Bay, and they’re starting to show in the Ocean too. I got a call from Cpt. Jack Blake on the Wildwood II on Thursday,

and the report for that day was of good catches of weakfish with Joe Green Sr. of Pine Hill taking the pool with an 11 lb. weakfish. Ctp. Jack said they also had 10 flounders, and that they were fishing in the vicinity of Somers Shoal. • • • LAST MINUTE news: "Cleaning" Keenan Osborn is now working oh Tom Brodresser’s new Ocean 40 and that boat is sparkingly clean. Bill Tomlin and Howard Severance have been using hard clams during their many catches — maybe this makes a difference.

THE BIGGEST DRUM of the season so far is dispfayed by Cpt. Hiram Thompson of Green Creek. He and wife Nancy caught eight the day he hooked this 93 lb. beauty; Nancy hooked five.
