able to get out there had some good catches. Cpt. Bob Schuman on the Sea Star had a good day in the Ocean with over 70 1 weakfish far his party on Wednesday, but I’ve really got to admit the fishing was spotty, and that drum fishing and weakfishing slowed down quite a bit. One thing I didn't get in the column last week was the results of the two contests that were held over the weekend. Down at Jim Bait and Tackle a fellow named Wally MacKay won the drum fish part of the Optimist’a Club Tourna ment with a 67 pound drum, and Chet Derbyshire came in first with a 12 pound weakfish in that category. On Roger Derbyshire's boat they had four drum, but none were big enough to take first place OVER ON THE other side of the big bridge in the South Jersey Fishing Tackle Center’s contest, James Biwald of Atco won that contest with a 72 pound drum, Rill Burnett of Philadelphia, came in second with a 71 pounder (his 52nd drumfish in 1962), John Walker of Glenloch took third place with a 67 pound 6 ounce humpback, and Wally MacKay took fourth with his 67 pounder. A.J. Bozzelli said that 15 drum were weighed in, but more than 30 were brought to the scales, and deemed too small to weigh in. There was action on the Ocean side too. Ellery Bowman of Villas told me he caught six nice sized blues at McCries Shoal on sleds down deep, and that a lot of the boats around him scored better than he did. Down at Ben Budd’s Tackle Shop in the Villas, Fred Giles weighed in a 9 lb 3 oz fluke taken at Somers Shoal, but Cpt. Al Nace told me he knew of two very successful catches of blues at South Shoal, so bluefish and flounder are starting to appea>. NOW, IF .SOME Of you are reading this, and happened to be fishing last weekend without much luck, don't get the idea I’m Inventing these stories. There were some good catches in some spots, but due to the unprecedented number of boats in the hot spots, most of the catches were a litUe bit off. We’ve had big fishing fleets on holidays before, but with the size of the fleet on Memorial Day we^eitrclcv that we’ve got arfy fish td) report. I Most, of the drum were taken up the Bay in tjie South Jersey FisHmg Tackle contest, so on Monday night Joe Halbruner and I headed up there on
the Janie T VII. We didn't find much action there, so we headed for a spot inside 14 Ft. Light where Tony Clrrlncone was anchored, and then we noticed the fog inshore, so we decided to try off the Green Shanty grounds inshore. After we settled on anchor there we noticed the ferry lights were getting real hazy, so we decided to head for the dock, and take our first skunking of the season. RIGHT AFTER we pulled in at Roseman's, Frank' Magadewski on the Shamrock pulled in along side of us, and started unloading. Joe said. "He’s got a drum,” - the upshot of this story was that Frank had been fishing about two miles inside 14 Ft. Light, and had a weakfish rod baited with squid in a rod holder wten he noticed the pole nodding - he picked it up, and sdN enough there was a 46 pound drum on it
PRIZE MONEY for first place In Lower Cape May Optimist WeakflshDrumfish Tournament is presented to Wally Malkay, right, by James Wallace, presented to Wally Malkay, right, by James Wallace, co-chairman. Malkay won drumfish division with 67-pound catch hanging around in background. which he landed, so there’s the first story we’re heard this year of a drum being taken on squid, but Frank showed me the small weakfish hook, and the drum, so I’ve got to believe it. I’ve been keeping in touch with Ben Rudd, of Budd’s Tackle Shop on Fulling Mill Rd. in the Villas. He’s been fishing with Jim Magill, who has 40 drum, and they think that drum will be here for another two weeks. I agree with him, and I set out to prove it Friday night with Cpt. Hiram Thompson. Earlier in the day Cpt. Paul Thompson told me he had two drum on east of 19
buoy, and had heard a lot of drum up there; (This started out as a fishing story, but it’s going to wind up as a very grateful story
I ai DAVE CONZALVI. of West Chester, Pa. with his 11 pound 6 ounce weakfish caught at the Horseshoe, in the Bay, with Cpt. Charlie Selby on the "Rainbow.” about our U.S. Coast .Guard.) WELL. IT was a little rough Friday night, and I tried to get Cpt. Jim Delaney to go with us, but he said his mother djdn’t raise stupid sons (^uess where that puts m£). We left Roseman's, and headed up the Bay where we finally anchored oivah edge east of 19 Buoy, and at the top of the tide we heard drum all over the place, but all we got was a big sting ray that "Hi” hooked, and I gaffed, and some sharks, which “Hi” caught, while I majored in king crabs. At 10:30 we pulled anchor, and started for home. Inside Brandywine Light we came off the top of a sea, and our engine.started heating up bad, so we shut her off. and filled the water tank with 2 gallons of antifreeze. We started underway again, but our salt water pump just wouldn't work, and she heated up again, so we threw anchor, and called the Coast Guard on our VHF. They responded immediately, and dispatched boat 41419 to rescue us. THOSE FELLOWS on the 419 contacted us as they left the Cape May Canal and after about a half-hour they found us at anchor. We complimented them
on their speed, and one of them said, "it sure helps, when someone knows where they are when they call us.” We did have a guardian angel watching over us, too, because the fog was so thick inshore that we didn’t see the sea buoy off the canal until we were wittin 10 feet of it. It really helps to have a boat with radar towing you in, especially in the canal, and the captain of the "419" knew where he was going. He kept iis on a long tow in the Bay, and shortened us up when we got to the canal, and then took us right to Roseman’s where he helped us get into the railway. 1 MAKE THIS all sound too simple. Those fellows left Cape May in response to our call, traveled up the canal in a dense fog; came eight miles out in the Bay, and found us, and brought us home with our life jackets on. All the way in the skipper kept asking me how the tow was going, and kept lights on us, so that we could steer with the tow; and did a superb job of boat handling under very adverse conditions.

JIM AHEARY of North Arlington, Va., with 8 weakfish he caught on the "Sea Star" Wednesday. Topper was 8 pounds 15 ounces. I’ve never seen a more dedicated group of men than the crew of the 419, and I want once again to say a big Thank You to you fellows. I hope your skipper reads this, and I hope a lot of other people do too. We’ve got a great Group here in Cape May in Search and Rescue, and it’s time somebody i^lls them so. I hope this message shows my gratefulness.
