"by Carolyn Gunthrop The annual tour, a project of the Cape May County Art League since 1949, extends from the banks of the Tuckahoe River to the meeting of ocean and bay at Cape May Point. Visitors may take the Tour, now a two-day event, at their own pace, starting from any direction. What can be seen on the tour; what are some of the highlights, setting it apart from any other tour? UPPER TOWNSHIP Some of the finest old buildings in the county can be found here, along Rt. 9 or in more remote sections. Along Marshallville Rd., by the Tuckahoe River, for example a glass works was founded in the last century by Randall Marshall. No trace of the industry.remains, . but on the tour the Thomas Chew Marshall House (1818) ahd the Randall Marshall House (1840) can be seen, as well as the Captain Belford Smith House (1852.
The Seaville Friends’ Meeting, on Rt. 9, dating from the early 1700s has been on every Tour since 1949 and is again open this year. The Old School House, circa 1830, on Rt. 9 and Ocean Ave., Palermo, is a one-room school of native pine and cedar. It is being restored by the Historical Preservation Society of Upper Township and is on the tour for the first time.
In many of the tour buildings, restoratioan work is underway, and this includes the two Marshall Houses open this year. Two houses in Dennisville are also undergoing restoration - the Hanna Williams House (circa 1787) and the Belle Carroll House (circa 1810, some parts older). Interest in preserving the county’s heritage has also led to the founding of several groups, such as the Historical Preservation Assoc, of Upper Township and now the Dennisville Historic PreservatiomAssn.

by Jacob Schaad CAPE MAY - If you have a yen for rickshaws, then you may be queuing up in Cape May this summer. Two young men from North Cape May, Victor Romeo and Bob Garino, may bring an oriental flavor to this city which thrives on a Victorian image. THEY DROVE a rickshaw to a meeting of the City Council, parked it outside a city hall door and with qualified success tried to sell the city fathers the idea that thier vehicles
could solve some of Cape May’s traffic problems by transporting people around ’.town. Their salesmanship included a ride for Mayor Arthur Blomkvest and another for Councilmen Harry Gilbert and Adrian Capehart As the owners put it, the rickshaws can accommodate at the most two skinny people at a time. THE THREE WHEEL rickshaws, garishly decorated in Hong Kong colors, are operated bicycle style. Garino said student-wrestlers-. from
Wesley United Methodist Church, Rt. 610, Petersburg, built 1853.
Lower Cape May Regional High School will pedal the vehicles during the summer as part of their conditioning program. Romeo and Garino have 10 rickshaws which they acquired m Bangladesh All of them are of Oriental decor, but the owners said if tjie initial program works out they plan to bring in more vehicles — and they definitely will be '•Victorian” rickshaws. THEY RECEIVED il mixed reaction from the city officials. "This is one that’s got me stymied," said the mayor, who was closely followed by a Cape May police, car when he was taken for a ride. "We are gearirig up for one of the heaviest sum mers in the history of thp city and I’m cortcerned about safety. Our streets are too small.’’ Capehart. who said tHe> Memorial Day weekend was "murder.” wondered if people might leave their' cars, at home and take a rickshaw instead "1 RECOMMEND that we let them try it and self destruct' if they want to." Capehart added.
Gilbert also was willing Jo give them a chance "I don't think it will take long to get a reaction, favorable or unfavorable," the councilman said. CITY MANAGER. Fred Coldren, asked his opinion, called the vehicle "unique" and said it has its place in the Orient and other spots along the New Jersey shore — but not in Victorikn Cape May He pledged his support, however, for the ultimate decision of Council. which was to give the rickshaws a chance to see if they will "self-destruct." Details and routes are still to be worked out, if the plan works out. it won’t be by accident
