Celebrating the beauty of the season Was the 10th annual flower show of Ocean City. Hundreds of flowers and plants were on exhibit at the Music Pier on Friday and Saturday in what officials describe as one of the biggest flower shows in the East, possibly the largest in New Jersey. Some 10,000 spectators were anticipated for the event. The flower shows were started in June of 1973 as the result of a suggestion by . James Penland, owner Of a boardwalk gift shop. A flower show committee, much of which still exists, was formed and the city provided the use of the Music Pier as well as a $1,000 budget. ADMISSION CONTINUES to be free although visitors are welcome to make donations. Contributid moneys are used for planting trees and shrubs in a city beautification project. The show is divided into categories of artistic design and horticultural. Before the public began viewing the exhibits at noon Friday, nine accredited ^ were locked inside the ig for three hours placing their stamps of approval on the winning entries. Special awards included "Best of Show” in artistic design; "Sweepstakes'^for the greatest number of blue ribbons to a single exhibitor in both divisions, and horticultural grpnd prizes for outstanding entries in that division. Professional florists decorated the inside of the pier and highlight of this year’s event was a large orchid display by Waldor, Philadelphia Flower Show winners, on the showroom stage. Colonial Florists decorated the center of the exhibit area. There also were educational displays by the Stockton State College Center for Environmental Research, Atlantic Community College, the Wetlands Institute and the Sea Shore African Violet Society of South Jersey. STONE HARBOR GARDEN CLUB won first prize in artistic design division at Ocean City’s flower show. Its exhibit, “October — 10th Month,” was a freestanding mass arrangement of colorful plant material staged on a 44 inch high pedastal with a 18 inch square top.
