Boat Sinks in Canal; Is Raised COLD SPRING — A 37 ft. pleasure craft which went down in the Cape May Canal Saturday evening mtly have struck a submerged portion of the railroad bridge. None of the five people onboard were injured, and the boat was eventually de-watered and towed to a private marina. According »o authorities, the Colonial cabin motor boat was owned by William A. Burns of Bensalem, Pa The coast Guard said he refused Coast Guard assistance. The Coast Guard, which first learned of the mishap from the skipper of a passing boat, said the Guard's assistance was refused. The craft was able to maneuver out of the rhain channel before being run aground on the north side of the canal.* The- N.J. Marine Police reported the operator informed them that the boat took on water quickly after going thru the railroad bridge. According to the Police, the operator said a vibration was felt when the craft was going beneath the open bridge. A Marine Police spokesman said that while the actual cause wasn't known as of Monday afternoon, the vessel may have struck a submerged portion of the bridge or a piling that might have broken loose. Private salvage operations continued thru the day Sunday and the craft was apparently towed from the scene late Monday morning after being raised from the bottom with the aid of a crane. Turtles AVALON — Mayor Ellsworth Armacost, whose late wife Marion was a leader in efforts to preserve the Diamondback Terrapin, has issued an appeal for the endangered species. Armacost pointed out that many people who see the turtles along or on roads pick the up and take them home, thereby causing their death. THE DIAMONDBACK Terrapin found in this area requires salt water and will die in fresh water. Those who find the turtles on roads are urged simply to remove them to a safe area.
