Only One Close Contest Locally

Voters in seven of the county's Sixteen municipalities last Tuesday selected candidates to run for their governing bodies, but only in three — Lower, Middle and Upper townships — did voters of either party have a choice of more than one candidate. And in only one of these contests — Upper Township — was the outcome even close. Lower Township GOP Committee candidate Bill Hevener and Middle Township Democrat candidate Charles Leusner won landslide victories over their opponents. LOWER TOWNSHIP incumbent Committeeman Jack Moran and a slate of 27 local Committee candidates were soundly defeated at the polls by newcomer Hevener and the local GOP organization's

incumbent district Committee candidates. Hevener outdistanced Moran in all 14 voting districts — winning by more than a 2 to 1 margin, 1,722 to 776. The race in Lower was an attempt by Moran and his followers to grasp power from the strong GOP organization led by Maurice Catarcio. On the Democratic, side of the ballot, Robert Fothergill of Erma ran unopposed. He received 525 votes in support of his plans to join Democrat CommitteewomanPeggie Bieberbach on the GOP controlled Committee. IN THE MIDDLE Township battle, Democrat Charles Leusner clobbered opponent John McMahon by almost a 4 to 1 margin. Leusner collected 870 votes to McMahon’s 261.

The Democratic nominee will square off in November against GOP candidate William Deaver, who ran unopposed in the primary, and received 708 votes. In a real dogfight in U|>per Township, local Republican alternate leader Ruth Millward won the right to run for a Township Committee seat, beating newcomer John McDonough by 90 votes — 820 to 730. Mr. McDttoough had the endorsement of the local Republican Club and was supported by Township Committeeman Leonard Migliaccio. Mrs. Millward was supported by Committeeman Daniel Beyel The Democrat who will face the GOP candidate in Nov. is Thomas Bonner. He received about 139 votes. In North Wildwood, voters selected candidates, for First and Second ward councilmen. No Democrats were on the ballot in the First Ward. On the Republican side was incumbent Lewis Ostrander, who received 318 votes. In the Second Ward, incumbent Democrat Robert J. Scully Jr. collected 44 votes and GOP candidate Carlo J. Accardi mustered 341. IN STONE HARBOR, four seats were up for grabs, no Democrats appearing on the ballot. On the GOP ticket, incumbent Mayor Arden W. Hand received 324 votes for a two-year unexpired term Incumbent councilmen Robert J. Fitzpatrick and Harry E. Strohmetz received 321 and 325 votes respectively for three-year terms. Incumbent Herbert L. Hornsby Jr. got 334 votes tward a one-year unex, piredterm. Democrats in Dennis Township gave incumbent Gary W. Errickson 117 votes toward his bid for a one-year Committee term. GOP newcomer Barry Grasso captured 178 votes. In Woodbine, no Democrat were on the balldt^for tl>e mdyor's position or two Council seats.
