Primary Results Winners Lose in County
bv Bob Shlles COURT HOUSE - Although they were the choice of Cape May County’s party leadership, successful Republican U.S. Senate candidate Millicent Fenwick and Democrat Frank Lautenberg were both defeated at the countywide polls last Tuesday. In the only contested primary race on the countywidc ballot, GOP voters selected-conservative Jeffrey Bell oyer the more moderate North Jersey Congresswoman by 849 votes - 5,172 to 4,863. Bell collected 54 percent of votes cast, Mrs. Fenwick 46 percent. STATEWIDE figures show Mrs. Fenwick, 72, defeated her challenger by a 30.000-vote margin. The hotly contested race for the seat recently vacated by Abscam victim Sen. Harrison Williams resulted in one of the highest Republican, turnouts in state history for a primary — about 45 per cent. According to County GOP leader Phil Mataliicci, morfc than 50 per cent of the county’s 22,000 registered Republicans went to the polls. On the Democratic side, countv voters selected from pine Senate hopefuls former Rep. Joseph LeFante of Bayonne. He defeatted the winner of the nomination, multimillionaire Frank I>autenberg of Montclair, by a slim 28-vote margin — 1,062 to 1,054. STATEWIDE. Mr. Lautenberg, 58 defeated his closest challenger, former Congressnian Andrew Maguire of Bergen County, by some 11,000 votes. Mr. lautenberg f tallied more than 103,165 votes while Maguire mustered in excess of 92,212. In Cape May County, Mr. LeFante received 33 per cent of the votes cast, Mr.
Lautenberg collected 32 per cent, and Mr. Maguire ' — who received 304 votes — came, in third with d per cent. OTHER DEMOCRATIC candidates and their totals included Mercer County freeholder Barbara Boggs Sigmund, 237 (7 per cent); Howard Rosen of Millburn. i79 (5 per cent); former state banking commissioner Angelo Bianchi of South Orange, 178 (5 per cent); fleet operator Richard D. McAIeer of Ocean Grove, 115 (3 per cent); Frank Forst of Jamesburg, 64 (2 per cent); and Cyril Yannarelli of West Paterson, 56 (2 per cent). Former Morristown mayor Donald Cresitello — who withdrew from the race shortly before the primary — received 35 votes (1 per cent). Mahoney of Buena Vista Twp., mustered 8,425* FOR COUNTY Clerk, GOP incumbent Angela Pulvino received 8,804 of the vdtes, while Democrat Edward J. Rosenberg collected 2,426. County freeholder nominations went to County Democratic leader James lannone, 2,556 votes, and incumbent GOP freeholder Jack Bittner, 8,286. Mr. Bittner, recently elected as mayor in Ocean City, is not expected to run in the November general election. The County GOP Executive Committee will choose a candidate for the fall ballots. In the vote for surrogate, the only candidate — GOP incumbent W. Robert Hentges — received 8,912 votes. Party Is Off N.
