29 large blue sharks. 2 bull sharks, and 1 thresher shark that went 225 lbs., but didn't qualify The winning captain of the Mako division was Dan Ciuss on the Huntress, and the winning angler was Earl Olsack of Westville. This pair took a 328 lb. mako for the top prize. Second place with a 320 lb. mako was Cpt. Joe Niodaba and angler Tom Kruz of Lindenwold, on the Cheryl Ann. Third place was taken by Cpt. Jim Emanuel and angler Rob Chmielwski with a 314 lb. mako on the Satan's Lady This team also caught a 158 lb. blue shark, which placed them first in that •category. IN THE Bull Shark Division, Cpt. Ray Htckel and angler David Dlnnocenti of Atlantic City got top spot on the Cirena with a whopping 433 pounder. I mention the captain and the angler, and the boat, because it is really a team effort all the way with these monsters. It was a tremendous contest, and the start of a great offshore season. Imagine all those big "Jaws", and the fleet of boats out there working on them. The next tournament will be South Jersey’s $10,000.00 White Marlin Open, and this will attract a host of the finest canyon'boat$. July 8, 9, & 10 THEN JULY 12, 13, & 14, the 25th Cape May County MarRp tournament will be held^Fhis is a release tournament, and as far as I know, the only one of its kind on the East Coast. In August, South Jersey Fishing Center, will host a Marlin Mardi Gras the 27th, 28th, & 29th; and then September 11 to 16 South Jersey will run the Tournament of Champioas, which will climax the canyon season. Only those who have succeeded in the other coastal tournaments will be eligible to fish in the champioas contest in September. Capt. Dick Weber compares these tournaments to Ancient Camelot when knights from all over competed in tests of skill.

NOW. ON TO present day fishing. This week has shown a return of big blues off Cape May. On Tuesday, Cpt. Jay Beecroft on the Bonito had 76 big blues for his party, while.on Wednesday, Cpt. Joey Drosea, on the Lobster House got 75 of those stammers and was back at the dock by 11:30. On the Bay side. Jack Osborne had the Red Beard out there with Bob I.epor, and hooked three drum on 20 lb. test and broke^fienT off, while Jim Maglfl was inside of him catching a 70 lb. drum that still hpd row in it. Jack and Cpt. Dogy Murphy are rigging the Red Beard up for offshore trolling, so they’ll probably be on the ocean side from now on unless drum catches get heavy. JOE HALBRUNER and I went out there Tuesday night, and Tommy Jorgensen was there inside of us, but the only thing of note that night was tht we got a preview of one of the Tall Ships heading ud the Bay towards Philadelphia It was pretty rough, and those drum wouldn't cooperate — but they’re

still around.

I was talking to Jimmy Godfrey at the northern South Jersey Fishing Tackle Canter, and he showed me a lure he made up that one angler had got-

ten 16 flounder with at Miah Maul. The topper in that catch was a 6Mi lb. flat-

tie.

Cpt. Jim Cicchitti on the Starlight has been having some good bluefish action at night chumming, and the Big Jim II has been having some good bluefish action daily with spotty weakfishing. It seems to me that a lot of weakfish moved in the Ocean towards the musselbeds. and up around Sea Isle. Cpt. Charlie Shaffer on the starfish is catching some tiderunners to the north of

us.

CPT. JOEY DROSEA had quite a week on the Lobster House. On Thursday he caught a 430 pound bull shark for his party, and then on Friday he pleased his angler with 41 big blues out on the East Lumps. Up Stone Harbor and Avalon way, Walt Hendee has been doirig-hjs thing. On the front cover of Angler’s N^w* this week Walt was shbvm with a 311 lb. mako, a^ng with Alex Argiroff of j^ne Harbor (1974 lb. rrufFo) Craig Otten (140 lb. mako) and Wayne Sommers of Dennisville (14TJ4 pound mako). They brought them into Smuggler’s Cove in Stone Harbor. My column next week will be a little different. John Fisher. Bill Halbrun^r, Frank Hineline, Joe Halbruner, and I are heading down to Hatteras for a trip to the Gulf Stream on Cpt. Ernal and Bill Foster’s Albatross boats. The Hatteras Blue Marlin Tournament will be winding up (they’ve had 40 blue marlin so far), and we might even get a shot at a big blue marlin. We’ll be staying at thd Atlantic View Hotel, and our captain will either be "Willie" Foster or "Ernie" Foster. If We get a good weather break it ought to be quite a trip. 1 HAVE TO wind up this column with anojher sad story on a loss to tie Jersey Caps: Paul M. Scull, 89. passed away Friday, night, ■ and I will miss him gfoatly.

I first knew Paul when he worked for my grand-dad, and later served with him. and under his presidency on the Cape May County Savings and Loan Board. He was my Sunday School teacher in the Methodist Church of Court Houses and later on Dick Seymour and I shared this responsibility with him. I saw hi receive his 50-year masonic lodge pin, but our friendship goes much deeper than that. PAUL WAS a good man. and he gave me a lot of boosts as I grew towards manhood — sometimes thcty were as painful as those plaster laths on my backside, but they were always helpful. He was very kind to me in many 'ways, and he helped many people throughout Cape May County. Individuals

like Paul Scull, who set examples for young men as they grow towards manhood, helped a lot of us who could have gotten lost in the rat race. Thank you, Paul; for your values, and your friendship.

328 LBS. MAKO is winched off the Huntress, captained by Dan Guss. This was the winner in the South Jersey Fishing Center Shark Tournament. The angler was Earl Olsack of Westville. The Huntress also caught and released 10 other sharks.
