RIO GRANDE - ••Gleaning" was the Biblical method of survival Mor the poor, instituted by God in Old Testament Times The. farmers were instfucted to leave th? crops, left over after harvesting the fields for the needy to gather instead of turning the crops under. Thereby, in this method the poor were able to receive sustenance in their fight for survival. In conjunction with the Gleaning Project sponsored by the New Jersey Green Thumb Program, Cape Human Resources in lending its Community Service Centers as distribution Sites for this project in the countv.

SENIORS HAVE worked three harvests yielding lettuce. turnms, turnip greens and radices. The project will rontmue throughout the summer. From the CHR Community SeMce Centers in Woodbine. Whitesboro and Wildwood, crops have been distributed to more than 375 needy families who have benefited from this program initiated June 3. THERE HAS ALSO been a strong coordination effort with all major agencies and community organizations who work with persons in need in the county to reach people who, due to circumstance and finance, rarely can afford a variety of fresh vegetables. This project could also be a partial solution for combating the serious food shortage of those needy persons who are no longer eligible for reduced or lost Federal Program assistance such as Food Stamps, SSI, and/or Social Security Disability. SEA ISLE CITY - The Phillies will bring the popular Phillies Home Run Derby here 1 p.m. Sunday, July 11. The contest is free for all boys and girls 8 to 15. Qfflcial entry forms will be available at Dealy Field the day of the contest. Home Run Derby uses an automatic pitching machine to throw 10 pitches to each contestant. Points are scored for all fair ball hits, distance hits and home runs. “A YOUNGSTER just meeting the ball every time can often outscor? the power hitter. The speed of pitch as well as the scoring distances change with each age division. Home Run Derby is looking to make' everyone a hitter," said Paul Bradley, derby direc-

tor.

The City Rec, sponsors of Hdme Run Derby will award 30 prizes. First, second and third place winners in each age division will teceive engraved ' Phillies plaques. The other prizes will be awarded by random drawing. This way, every boy or girl entering the contest is a potential winner.

FIRST. SECOND and third place winners will ^represent Sea Isle City in a regional final scheduled for mid-August. From the regionals, winners advance to the champimtship set for Veterans StadiuWsuhday, I Sept. 5. The championship will, precede a Phillies

afternoon game.

Lew Steelman, coordinator of the city contest, stated a separate girls softball contest will he held.

$20,000 Pledge

COURT HOUSE • - A $20,000 pledge to the Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital Fund Drive from the First Jersey National Corporation has boosted the fund drive closer to the one million dollar mark. The ,pledge was presented to hospital administrator William Waldron at a recent luncheon hosted by First Jersey National Corporation, at the Whitebriar in Avalon, by William T. McQuilkln, President of First Jersey National Bank/South.
