The planner of Sea Grove was architect James Sidney, whose son designed the Carriage Mouse 11876) on the Physick Estate. The Physick Mansion 11881) itself is atrributed to Frank Furness, the architectural genius of Philadelphia The Carriage House, home of the Art League since 1960, and the Mansion are open all through the summer as well as on Tour Days. A NAME THAT APPEARS throughout Cape May is that of another Philadelphia architect. Stephen Decatur Button. He was responsible for many of Cape May’s finest structures Houses open on July D that were designed by Button include the McCreary Mouse (1869); the Mainstay (1872) and the Joseph Evans Mouse. Henry Sims Jr., designed the Church of the Advent. originally a summer chapel It wasn't until the past century that many buildings were designed by architects. In fact in colonial times homes often began as tiny cottages, one room up and one room- down, and were enlarged by succeeding

generations.

Builders were often their own designers. It is said that Daniel Hand, builder of the Old Court Mouse < 1848) studied the books of Sir Christopher Wren, which inspired him to create this masterpiece William Armstrong, a Dennisville builder, carved the beautiful mantels in the Nathaniel Holmes Mouse,
